Kaii Winkler swam to a new German National Record in the men’s 100 butterfly on Thursday night, touching in a 50.92 for 2nd behind Ilya Kharun’s 50.61. Winkler broke the previous record of a 51.19 set by Steffen Deibler back at the 2013 German Championships.
The record had stood as the 2nd oldest remaining individual record on the men’s side in long course, only sitting behind Paul Biedermann‘s 1:42.00 200 free from the 2009 World Championships that still sits as the World Record.
Split Comparison
| Winkler | Deibler | |
| 50 | 23.62 | 23.86 |
| 100 | 27.3 | 27.33 |
| 50.92 | 51.19 |
Winkler was faster than Deibler was on both 50’s, although the first 50 saw a greater difference. Winkler dropped over half a second off his previous lifetime best of a 51.51 that he swam at the US Open back in December as well as at US Olympic Trials back in 2024.
The swim marks Winkler’s first individual German National Record as he has previously been a member of the record setting SCM Men’s 4×200 free relay from the 2024 World Championships. Winkler swam at 2024 US Olympic Trials and then represented Germany at the 2024 Paris Olympics as he has dual citizenship.

Steffen Deibler
Haven’t heard this name in a long time. Good for Kaii. Real talent and real deal.
A bit strange to see him setting PBs at this meet, considering the focus meet for him this summer should be the Europeans, which he has already qualified for. Maybe he will drop more time there?
