The 2026 Irish Open Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials saw Mona McSharry lower her own national record in the women’s 200m breaststroke en route to grabbing gold on night three at the Aurora Sports & Leisure Centre.
25-year-old McSharry stopped the clock at a mark of 2:22.22, downing her previous personal best and Irish standard of 2:22.49 she established at the 2024 Mel Zajac Jr International Swim Meet in 2024.
McSharry also lowered her own meet record of 2:23.02, a time she established during this morning’s heats.

Marlins swimmer McSharry, who is based in Tennessee, beat her competitors by over 3 seconds. Ellie McCartney settled for silver in 2:25.72 and Niamh Connery rounded out the podium in 2:33.49.
McSharry now ranks as the 3rd-swiftest woman on the planet at the moment.

Speaking after the race the 26-year-old told Swim Ireland, ‘It’s pretty exciting, that 200 Breaststroke is that event where you never really know where it’s going to be on every day, I mean it’s just to nice to see the hard work in training pay off and be able to put together a really good race.’
