2026 Speedo Canadian Open – Day 2 Prelims Recap

2026 SPEEDO CANADIAN OPEN

After a strong showing last night in the 100 back, where she broke the Canadian Swimming Open record for the second time that day, Taylor Ruck returned to the pool this morning, doubling up on top seeds. The 25-year-old started things off with a dominant performance in the 100 free, securing the top seed thanks to her 54.45 prelims swim. The four-time Olympic medalist Ruck had the fastest first and last 50s, going out in 26.13 before closing in 28.32 to earn lane 4 tonight by over a full second. Surrounding her tonight will be Ella Jansen (55.58), last night’s 200 winner, and Bella Sims and Leah Tigert, who tied this morning for 3rd at 56.03.

Ruck returned to the pool again in the 50 fly, where she cut over half a second off the meet record, going 26.29 to secure another top billing. Like in the 100 free, Ruck was the cream of the crop, touching nearly a second ahead of Jansen, who added her 2nd second place of the morning. Jansen again will line up on Ruck’s side tonight thanks to her 27.28 prelims swim. On the other side of Ruck will be the 3rd-seeded Matea Gigovic, whose record from last year Ruck broke.

Ruck wasn’t the lone record breaker of the morning as Oliver Dawson, who himself broke the meet record twice yesterday in the 50 breaststroke, returned to the pool in the 200 breaststroke. An Indiana University commit for the upcoming year, Dawson chopped nearly half a second off the record, lowering it from 2:13.26 to 2:12.82 this morning. The 18-year-old is the lone swimmer out under 1:06, opening his 100 in 1:02.88 and is the top seed tonight by over six seconds.

Dawson’s record may only be threatened by himself, but Ole Eidam‘s new meet record in the 50 fly could be under threat. The Michigan swimmer went 23.66 in the 50 fly this morning, erasing 3rd seed Eric Ginzburg’s record off the board. Eidam was the lone swimmer under 24.00 this morning, but this morning’s runner-up, Finlay Knox (24.17), has already been under 24.00 this season, having done so at the Westmont Pro Swim Series last month, so could threaten Eidam’s hours-old record. Eidam is also entered in the men’s 100 free as the 3rd seed, as are Knox and Ginzburg, who finished 5th and 7th this morning. The trio will all be chasing Daniel Krichevsky, who posted the lone sub-49 time of the morning with his 48.93 prelims swim.

With the meet covering just three days, doubling and tripling up on an A-final appearance is rather commonplace. Javier Acevedo won the 50 back this morning in 25.87 before finishing 8th in the 100 free, while his counterpart in the Women’s 50 back, Ingrid Wilm, added a 12th place finish in the 100 free and a 6th place finish in the 50 fly to her win in the 50 back, where her 28.64 leads the field by nearly a full second.
