SwimMAC Extends Lead in Team Scoring on Day 3 of 2014 U.S. Nationals

SwimMAC Carolina extended their lead on day 3 of the 2014 U.S. National Championships in the team standings, and are now over 100 points ahead of second-place Cal in the combined team standings.

The SwimMAC men, especially, did work with 84 points. Nobody else scored more than 50 (Cal men). David Marsh’s crew got a win in the 400 IM, had three swimmers in the A-Final of the men’s 100 fly (Tim Phillips, Ryan Lochte, and Matthew Josa), plus the runner-up in the 50 back (Nick Thoman).

The SwimMAC women, while it wasn’t quite as obvious, earned even more – 102 points – on Friday. That’s in part thanks to their 3rd-place 800 free relay, and partially thanks to a 3rd/4th place result in the women’s 50 breaststroke from Katie Meili and Micah Lawrence.

The Cal combined squad, even with event victories from Rachel Bootsma and Tom Shields, along with a second-place swim in the 800 free relay, still lost ground in the combined scores.
