22.4 50 Freestyler Kasey Schmidt to Transfer From Virginia to Hawaii

Sprint free/butterflier Kasey Schmidt has announced her decision to transfer from Virginia to Hawaii in the Spring 2017 semester. Schmidt, a sophomore, swam to the 6th fastest all-time 50 free at Virginia with her 22.44 from the 2015 Georgia Invitational. She also set a personal best 54.44 in the 100 fly at that meet. Later in the season, she went on to score for the Cavaliers in the 50 free and 100 fly at the 2016 ACC Championships.

From Schmidt’s Facebook page:

“After much thought and consideration, I am thrilled to announce my decision to transfer to the University of Hawaii for the spring semester of 2017. I want to thank all of my coaches and teammates at the University of Virginia for being so supportive and kind to me through this process. I feel grateful to have an opportunity to put myself in an environment that will allow me to thrive and have the best college experience possible. I am STOKED to be a part of the Rainbow Wahine and continue my college career under the sunshine with a great coach and an awesome group of girls! Mahalo to everyone and GO BOWS!”

At Hawaii, Schmidt will be competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference. She’ll be joining a women’s squad that placed 2nd at the 2016 MPSF Championships. Schmidt should have a major impact at the conference meet, as she’s already fast enough to have won the 50 free last season and placed in the top 5 of the 100 free, 200 free, and 100 fly.

Schmidt’s Top Times:

  • 50 free- 22.44
  • 100 free- 50.16
  • 200 free- 1:49.56
  • 100 fly- 54.44
  • 200 IM- 2:03.71

Hawaii is a great place to be a sprinter right now… their head coach worked with Ivy Martin, Chase Kinney and Cannon Clifton while at Wisconsin and all of them got considerably faster under his tutelage. Solid transfer choice for Schmidt and great pickup for Schemmel and Co.
