For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids,” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Ups” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mids” to B finalists, and “Downs” to C finalists.

Princeton had a strong morning session, scoring over 40 points more than their psych sheet seeding. The Tigers gained in every event save the 500 free. Notably, they put 3 swimmers in the ‘A’ finals of the 200 IM and 50 free and 3 divers in the ‘A’ final of the 1-meter diving. Two of Princeton’s divers moved into the top 8 on the last couple of dives, having hovered in the middle of the 9-16 pack through round 3.
Harvard had the most total finalists of any team with 18. The Crimson landed 3 in the ‘A’ final of the 50 free, 2, in the ‘A’ final of the 500 free, and 1 each in the top 8 of the 200 IM and diving.
Cornell (+34), Brown (+17.5), and Columbia (+17) all outperformed their psych sheet seedings. While Columbia was fairly even in spreading their overperformances across all events except the IM, Cornell really stepped up in the diving (+24) and IM (+9). Brown did particularly well in the 50 free, earning 2 slots in the ‘A’ final and 2 in the ‘B’ final for 27.5 more points than expected. The Bears won the 800 free relay last night and could pose a threat in the 200 free relay tonight.
