2026 Italian Championships: Curtis Lowers 50 Free NR as Razzetti Claims 100 Fly Top Seed

2026 Italian Swimming Championships

Alberto Razzetti claimed the top seed in the men’s 100 fly in 52.01, just off the time of 51.83 he posted in the final last year. He split  51.10 on the 4×100 medley relay last night and set a new best in the 50 fly on the first day of competition, so could be one to watch for the European Championships qualification time of 51.40 tonight.

Lorenzo Gargani, who won the 50 fly in 23.31, took second this morning in 52.18, just ahead of Federico Burdisso in 52.30. Gianluca Sansone and Michele Busa, the latter of whom missed the 50 fly final, moved through in 5th and 6th.

The women’s 100 back was topped by Federica Toma in 1:01.80, one of two women to break 1:02 this morning. The other was Aurora Velati, who sliced half a second off her entry time to touch in 1:01.82.

Sara Curtis, who led off Centro Sportivo Esercito’s 4×100 medley relay last night in 1:00.35, took on the 50 free instead this morning. She claimed top spot by 0.80 seconds, lowering her own Italian record of 24.41 by 0.12 seconds as she touched in 24.29. That marks her second Italian record of the week after going 27.33 to slice 0.06 seconds off Silvia Scalia‘s 50 back record on Wednesday.

Agata Ambler placed 2nd in 25.09, with short course national record holder Silvia di Pietro 4th in 25.21.

The men’s 200 back saw just four swimmers under 2:00, led by Daniel Del Signore in 1:58.98. Thomas Ceccon moved safely through in 6th after posting 2:01.14, his second swim of the meet after leading off the 4×100 medley relay for Fiamme Oro in 53.16 last night.

Of note Lorenzo Mora, the Italian record holder in the short course 100 back was DQ’d this morning, however would not have qualified for the final regardless.

Paolo Borrelli led the women’s 200 fly by nearly two seconds, clocking the only swim in the field under 2:10 as she aims to defend her national title. She swam 2:09.65 this morning, 1.65 seconds off her best of 2:08.00 which she swam to claim bronze at the World University Games last summer. Top seed Anita Gastaldi added nearly four seconds from her best of 2:09.94 which she set last month to miss the final in 9th.

Christian Mantegazza, the defending champion in the men’s 200 breast, claimed top spot by 0.24 seconds this morning. He swam a controlled 2:12.59 to lead Matteo Telesca, who set a new best with his time of 2:12.83. Alessandro Fusco, last year’s silver medalist, moved through in 3rd place in 2:13.14.

The men’s 200 free proved to be cut-throat, with just 0.56 seconds separating 5th and 14th. Alessandro Ragaini was the only swimmer to break 1:48 to claim lane 4 in the final in a time of 1:47.76, half a second ahead of Marco De Tullio‘s 1:48.24.

National record holder Carlos D’Ambrosio, who split 1:44.37 in the men’s 4×200 free relay on Wednesday for the 27th-fastest split in history, was just 0.16 seconds away from missing the ‘A’ final here. He placed 7th in 1:49.09, with last night’s 200 IM champion Jacopo Barbotti claiming the final spot in the final in 1:49.14.

D’Ambrosio’s best stands at the 1:45.23 he swam in the semi-finals at last summer’s World Championships, where he placed 6th in the final in 1:45.27. Barbotti’s PB was set just last month as he clocked 1:47.64 at a meet in Spain, and after a two-second drop in the 200 IM will be one to watch as well tonight, in a race that could see some serious outside smoke.
