Day three of the 2025 Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships saw another impressive performance in the men’s backstroke events at the hands of 20-year-old Matthew Ward.
After clocking a new lifetime best of 24.94 in last night’s 50m back final, the Bath ace doubled down with a time of 54.00 to take this evening’s 100m back event.
Splitting 26.22/27.78, Ward got to the wall in the sole outing of the field under the 55-second barrier.
Reaping silver was Sheffield’s Samuel Greenbank who touched in 55.51 followed by Stirling’s Zach Speakman who collected bronze in 55.72.
Ward was actually faster in the morning, producing a heats time of 53.77.
Both outings here were within striking distance of the 53.52 lifetime best he registered at this year’s Aquatics GB Championships. That effort rendered him Great Britain’s 8th-swiftest performer in history.
Making waves in the boys’ 17/18 100m back final was 17-year-old Dean Fearn of Aberdeen.
Fearn clocked a time of 54.94 to come within half a second of the British Age Record of 17-year-old University of Florida swimmer Jonathon Marshall established in 2022.
