2015 Arena Pro Series At Charlotte To Use Colorado Time System’s Backstroke Start Devices

Colorado Time Systems, a PlayCore company, is pleased to participate in the 2015 Arena Pro Series at Charlotte by providing backstroke start devices to be used in the competition, as well as staff on hand to help educate the athletes and officials on their use.

“The backstroke start devices have gained recognition over the past few months, and have been used in several high level competitions,” said Dr. Anita Sayed, PlayCore Senior Vice President and Colorado Time Systems’ General Manager. “We are looking forward to seeing the times for this meet and enhancing the athlete experience.”

During the recent Four Corners Senior Sectionals in Austin, the average time drop for the top 32 swimmers were recorded and received by the athletes with amazement. Average time reductions were: Women’s 200~ -1.22sec, Women’s 100~ -.42sec, Men’s 200~ – .45 sec, Men’s 100~ -1.95sec; making for a really fun event.

Colorado Time Systems’ backstroke start device was designed to reduce slips on the wall and improve start reaction times for backstroke swimmers. The units automatically retract up and out of the water after the swimmer leaves the wall, which eliminates the chance of an inaccurate touch on the touchpad during the race.

I love it! If nothing else, confident that I won’t slip at the start.

I love this sport and I love the innovations. We had our swim team kids try it out and they loved it. It does take 2-3 times to get it down pat. Even our 5 year olds were able to use it easily. I think this is an awesome product and long overdue!

Phil Moriarity was the first with the idea a long time ago. Wan’t accepted because of fear that pads would be damaged.

Oh cool, it costs $650. Know what’s significantly cheaper? Just letting people put their toes over the gutter.

(And I know some pools don’t have a water-level gutter, but the ones in their official demonstration video do. Which is what made me think of it. Thanks, demo video!)

$650 is quite a rip off. Given the quality of the wedge I used, and my judgement of its quality and construction upon fiddling with it, I’d say I’d pay no more than $100 for it…and that’s stretching it. I can’t believe one of the companies hasn’t come up with a cheap backstroke wedge!

I got to experiment with the Colorado Time Systems backstroke start wedge at USMS Spring Nationals this past weekend in San Antonio. I wasn’t a huge fan, but looking at the pictures CTS has on their website, it appears that they weren’t set up properly at the San Antonio pool.

The wedge itself worked quite well and I didn’t slip on any of my three practice starts. However, there is quite a bit of tension on the straps, so if you’re not jamming down on the wedge with your feet, it will pull up. I tend to stay relaxed on the wall till the actual start, so that resulted in a struggle to keep the wedge in place.
