A brief explanation: we use the expressions “ups” and “mids” and “downs” to describe the three finals at the ACC Championships. “Ups” are A-finalists, “Mids” are B-finalists, and “Downs” are C-finalists. In the ACC, all three of those score, by the following scoring chart for individual events (double for relays):

  1. 32
  2. 28
  3. 27
  4. 26
  5. 25
  6. 24

Through one day of competition here is where the women of the ACC stand

  1. Virginia Tech 178
  2. UNC 158
  3. Miami(FL) 150
  4. UVA 144
  5. Notre Dame 141
  6. Louisville 139
  7. NC State 111
  8. FSU 102
  9. Pitt 101
  10. Duke 94
  11. Georgia Tech 48
  12. Boston College 30
  13. Clemson 4

Looking at tonight up/down chart its clear that UVA will look to climb back into the top spot with 4 Cavaliers in the A final of the 500 free.  With Virginia Tech having only 1 500 freestyler back tonight and UNC placing only 2 in the A final don’t be surprised to see Virginia back in the driver’s seat after event 5.

Moving forward to the girls the 200 IM UNC looks to be in some trouble as they have 0 up 2 mid and 2 down while NC State and Louisville look to get back into the team race with 2 a piece in the Championship final.  Needless to say Virginia’s depth is apparent as ever with 3 up 2 mid and even 1 down.

While the sprint group of North Carolina State is recognized for their men’s efforts this morning the women made it clear they were not to be taken lightly.  Riki Bonnema ended the morning session with a blistering 21.87 to break the ACC meet and Conference record set by Sara Smith back in 2009.  NC State qualified two in the A with 4 more sprinters sneaking into the B final for the Wolfpack.  Watch out for the 200 Free Relay team of North Carolina tonight as the lady Tar Heels qualified 3 in the A final for the evening.

Note: these tables have been updated to include diving.
