Stanford’s Emily Thompson continued to roll on day 3 of the 2025 Summer Sectional meet in Novato, CA. The rising Stanford sophomore kicked off the Saturday night finals session by winning the women’s 100 fly, stopping the clock in 1:00.93. The swim comes in exactly a second off her career best of 59.93, which she swam last summer. Orinda Aquatics 15-year-old Stella Canoles was excellent, taking 2nd in 1:01.37. That swim marks Canoles’ first time under 1:02 in the event. Another 15-year-old, Mikayla Tan out of San Ramon Valley Aquatics, had a great swim as well, coming in 3rd with a 1:01.86. Similar to Canoles, that performance marks Tan’s first time under 1:02 in the event.

Tan then went on to win the women’s 100 breast in a speedy 1:09.38. She took half a second off her previous best time of 1:09.83, which she had just swum back in late May. It was 13-year-old Zadie Schatz who came in 2nd last night, swimming a 1:10.94. That was a massive swim for the youngster, taking almost 3 seconds off her previous best of 1:10.94. Coincidentally, both swimmers have now risen to #33 all-time in their respective age groups, 15-16 for Tan and 13-14 for Schatz. Of course, they’re both on the young end of their age groups, so they have a ton of time left to rise up those ranks.

Stanford’s Zhier Fan won the men’s 100 breast in 1:02.25 last night. Fan was a bit off his career best of 1:00.64, which he swam back in 2022. Aquasol Swim Team’s Cruz Lopez came in 2nd with a 1:02.74, marking his first time under 1:03 in the event.

Another Stanford swimmer, Rafael Gu, won the men’s 100 fly with a 53.52. In prelims, Gu went under 54 seconds for the first time in his career, swimming a 53.97, then took his mark further down in finals.

USC’s Lindsay Barnes won the women’s 200 back by 2 seconds last night, swimming a 2:16.19. Barnes was just off her career best of 2:15.68 with the swim. Rancho San Dieguito’s Claire O’Mara, 14, came in 2nd with a 2:18.22. That was a huge performance for O’Mara, who entered the meet with a personal best of 2:21.36.

In the men’s 200 back, another Rancho San Dieguito swimmer, Darmen Yessengeldy, won with a time of 2:08.07. The swim marked a new personal best by a second. Yessengeldy just managed to touch out Orinda Aquatics 14-year-old Fedor Igoshin, who swam a 2:08.21. Igoshin clipped his previous best of 2:08.65, which he swam back in April.

The women’s 400 free saw Wolverine Aquatics’ Kingsley Rosevold win in 4:22.35. She swam a consistent race, splitting 1:03.19 on the opening 100, then splitting 1:06.96, 1:06.88, and 1:05.32 respectively the rest of the way.

Stanford’s Cole Ballard won the men’s 400 free in 4:00.46. Ballard was just a hair off his career best of 4:00.11.
