London Awarded 2016 European Championships Hosting Duties

London is back on the European swimming schedule. After a vast reduction in size, the London Aquatics Centre that hosted the 2012 Olympic swimming competitions has been awarded hosting duties for the 2016 European Championships, which are scheduled to come prior to that year’s Olympics in Rio.

The pool, which is currently being reduced from its original 17,500 seats to 2,500, will be opened to the public in 2014 and host its first major international competition two years later with its two 50 meter pools and 25 meter diving tank.

The pool will still have the capability to add an additional 1,000 for ‘major competitions,’ which one would presume is an umbrella that this meet would fall under.
