The Brazilian aquatics federation (CBDA) has announced its roster for the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championships that will take place from July 24th to August 9th in Kazan, Russia.
Among the names on the roster are the old guard in men’s swimming that has been steady and consistent, but failed to make the big breakthrough for a relay medal that many hope they will do at their home Olympics in 2016.
That includes the defending World Champion in the 50 free and 50 fly Cesar Cielo, although he will enter this meet without having won a single title at the Maria Lenk Trophy (Brazil’s long course national championship meet) for the first time since he was a junior swimmer.
Also on the roster is some new Brazilian blood, specifically World Junior Record holder Matheus Santana, who missed his first big shot at a senior Brazilian team last year (Pan Pacs) in favor of the Youth Olympic Games. Brazilians other big young star, Brandonn Almeida, won’t swim at Worlds, and instead will pull double duty at the Pan Am Games and World Junior Championships.
At the 2013 World Championships, all 5 of Brazil’s pool swimming medals were won by its men’s team, but in 2015 that could change thanks to Etiene Medeiros. The 23-year old, standing just 5’6″ tall, broke the World Record in the 50 backstroke in short course meters last December, and leads the world in the event so far in 2015.
