Wyoming women’s swimming and diving earned victory in its first Mountain West dual of the 2016-17 season on Friday evening, defeating the New Mexico Lobos by a score of 167-132.
The Cowgirls tabbed first-place finishes in 10 of the dual’s 16 events, including sweeps in the diving and relay events. UW jumped out to an early, winning eight of the first nine events. Freshman diver Karla Contrerasopened the meet with a victory in the one-meter dive, scoring a 295.80. Teammates CeeJay Harris andLauren Puglisi rounded out the top-three. Contreras followed up her performance with a first-place finish in the three-meter dive, scoring a 325.95. Another freshman, Courtney Roeber, clocked a stand-out time of 54.45 in the 100 freestyle for her first race victory of her UW career.
“We really loaded up the front end of the meet, and once we got through the second round of diving I knew we could do some things with some kids who haven’t raced a whole lot,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said. “I was really impressed with Courtney Roeber’s 100 freestyle race, for a freshman to step up like that in a conference dual meet. The divers were unbelievable today, they were as good as I’ve seen in 10 years. I was also very impressed with [Adriana] Palomino of New Mexico breaking two pool records today. She destroyed a pool record from 1984 when a conference championship meet was held here, and she broke it by four seconds.”
Palomino broke her first pool record in the 1000 freestyle, with a time of 10:23.34. She later repeated her effort in the 500 freestyle, setting a new Corbett record with a time of 4:58.43.
Wyoming swimming and diving will travel to Colorado Springs to face Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 27 for a dual beginning at 5 p.m. MT. The UW women will then return home to compete against New Mexico State on Friday, Oct. 28. The matchup with the Aggies is also set for 5 p.m.

The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team fell to Wyoming 167-132 on Friday in the Lobos’ season opener.
New Mexico won six out of the 16 events with Adriana Palomino and Emily McGilleach taking two events. The sophomore Palomino dominated the 500 (4:58.43 – won by more than 18 seconds) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:23.34 – won by more than 16 seconds) and set school records in each event while the senior McGill won the 200 breaststroke (2:23.33) and the 200 individual medley (2:09.33).
Also winning events Friday for the Lobos was sophomore Carol De Groote Tavares in the 200 backstroke (2:06.74) while senior Abigail Wheeler claimed first in the 100 butterfly (56.84).
The Lobos also claimed seven second-place finishes in De Groote Tavares in the 100 backstroke (57.97), McGill in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.49), Wheeler in the 200 butterfly (2:09.08), freshman Talia Passarelli in the 50 (24.48) and 100 freestyle (54.54 – just .09 back of first), Lindsey Englestead in the 200 breastroke (2:23.40) and Anna Lengyel in the 500 freestyle (5:16.96).
Allyson Concepcion was the top diver for UNM in both the 1-meter (fourth – 237.38) and 3-meter (third – 256.28) events.
“This was a hard fought, competitive opening dual meet,” UNM swim coachDorsey Tierney-Walker said. “The entire team showed tremendous effort.”
New Mexico returns to host Northern Arizona on Oct. 29 at Seidler Natatorium.
