The Western Illinois men’s and women’s swimming and diving team had a strong showing Saturday (Nov. 4) at Brophy Hall Pool competing against Olivet Nazarene and Valparaiso. The women dominated the field in the dual meet, besting both the Crusaders 197-54 and the Tigers 142.5-124.5. The men topped Valparaiso 185-82 but fell to Olivet Nazarene 150-123.

“I purposely had them get up and race yesterday during practice to simulate our multiple day conference championship and midseason meet,” said Western Illinois head coach Greg Naumann. “They definitely felt the workout, but it’s something that they need to be able to do as we get into our season further.”

Western Illinois began the meet with Taylor WinkelErica HagenMiranda Mathus and Casey Roberts winning the 400-medley relay with a mark of 4:04.84.Madison Chao and Winkel finished in the top two spots in the 100-back with times of 1:02.70 and 1:03.00, respectively. The pair did the same in the 200-back with marks of 2:16.06 and 2:18.08, respectively.

In other individual events, Marissa Purdum won the 50-free (25.01), narrowly edging out Roberts (25.43). Samir Almhiemid (22.06) and Seth Brady took the top two slots in the same event on the men’s side.

In the 100-free, Allison DeWane (55.18), Purdum (55.20) and Roberts (55.35) took the top three slots for the women. Phillip Kudella (2nd, 48.96), Almhiemid (T-3rd, 49.47) and Brady (T-3rd, 49.47) were strong for the men.

The Leathernecks earned the top three spots in the 100-fly with Mathus (1:00.45) winning the event over Dana Kaftan (1:03.32) and Amy Borgstede (1:03.55).

Hannah Fisher (1000-free, 11:28.27), Purdum (200-free, 2:02.47), Erica Hagen (100-breast, 1:05.99; 200-breast, 2:32.77; 200-IM, 2:18.72) and Amanda Schaefer (500-free, 5:32.49) all earned respective second-place times.

On the men’s side, Brennan Bladel won the Leathernecks’ first event with a swim of 54.02 in the 100-back. Connor Owens took the 100-breast with a time of 1:01.62.

Kudella (200-free, 1:44.89), Owens (200-breast, 2:11.21) and Bladel (100-fly, 55.24) also swam for second touches.

The Purple and Gold closed the dual meet with a pair of wins in the 200-free relay. Mathus, DeWane, Roberts and Purdum won on the women’s side by swimming to a 1:40.77 time, while Almhiemid, Kudella, Brady and McQuigg’s 1:28.14 mark taking the men’s event.

Colin Parker won the 1-meter dive with a score of 241.20.

“I know that the entire team is looking forward to a couple of days of rest going into that meet so that they can get up and swim some of their fastest times this year,” Naumann said.

The Leathernecks will be back in action from Nov. 17-19 in Indianapolis for the House of Champions meet.
