- “2025 VA SLC Senior Champs” on Meet Mobile
The VSI Senior Championships took place from July 17-20 at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex in Hampton, Virginia, where Virginia Tech junior Brendan Whitfield was one of the biggest highlights.
Whitfield fired out of the gates in the 50 free, throwing down a winning result of 22.08.
Sergio Lopez Miro, the head swimming and diving coach for the Hokies, captured the race and posted it on Instagram. His post reads:
Congrats Brendan Whitfield for a blasting 22.08
In the 50 Free with a couple days resting and an awesome cycle of lifting.
Great job by Coach Steve Steketee!

Whitfield’s time ranks him as the 50th fastest performer in the world this year, and 9th among Americans.
Top 10 American Performers in 2025:
1. Jack Alexy: 21.36
2. Jonny Kulow: 21.73
3. Quintin McCarty: 21.79
4. Chris Guiliano: 21.86
T5: Drew Salls: 21.93
T5: Matt King: 21.93
7. Michael Andrew: 21.90
8. Brooks Curry: 22:03
9. Brendan Whitfield: 22.08
10. Daniel Baltes: 22.09
His 22.08 shaved over two tenths of a second off of his previous best of 22.33, which he set in prelims, and topped his 22.39 performance from US Nationals last month, where he touched 14th.
He covered the 50 meters in just 33 strokes, highlighting his efficiency and technique en route to his significant time drop. For reference, at the 2023 World Championships, Cam McEvoy would take 36 strokes when he would win gold in 21.06.
Whitfield saw success throughout the meet, setting new personal marks in the 100 free (49.07) and 100 fly (53.09). Both swims saw him shave time from his performances at recent elite meets. His 100 free topped his 49.28 from U.S. Nationals, and the 100 fly bested his previous standard of 53.33 from the TYR Pro Swim Series on Fort Lauderdale back in May.
The 20-year-old Whitfield will be entering his junior season with the Hokies. At the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Whitfield finished 15th in the 100 free in 41.69, and split 41.04 in the 8th-place effort for the Hoakies in the 400 free relay, the fastest split in the Virginia Tech relay.

Why no Condorelli on list?
Partial taper, mid-lifting, a good time for today, and a great sign for the future. I would rank Michael Andrew in 5th. But all that will sort out. T5: Drew Salls: 21.93
T5: Matt King: 21.93
7. Michael Andrew: 21.90
Awesome swim. Honestly he may have been even faster — no touch pads were at that end of the pool, so 22.08 was the plunge time.
This was a fully automatic (touchpad) time. The pads were not connected to the scoreboard, so the times did not display immediately, but they were from the touchpads.
Thank you for clearing that up. Any idea why the meet results don’t include 50m splits? The data is nice to have for all the races but it’s especially tough not to have it for the 200 IM.
At the facility for this meet, there was a problem (known before the meet) with the touchpads at the turn end (also the finish end for the 50s) communicating with the timing system at the start end. Thus, for the meet, all non-50 events were run with one timing system (that was not capable of capturing 50 splits) and the 50m events were timed separately with a system that was not communicating with the scoreboard.
This kid’s on fire right now.
