Howley broke Audrey Lacroix‘s record form 2007. The FISU website lists the record as 2:05.83, but all the official results from the meet have the time listed as 2:06.83, and Swimming Canada’s ranking hub has Lacroix’s best time at 2:05.95 from the 2009 World Championships.
Regardless of what the former time actually was, Howley broke the record by at least half-a-second

This swim marks more than a second-and-a-half drop for Howley, who swims for the University of Virginia. She came into the season at 2:06.85 from July of 2023. At Nationals, she dropped about a tenth to swim 2:06.79, finishing 3rd.
This is Howley’s only event this week, and she will get another crack at the record in tomorrow’s event final.

Such a shame, really, that Charlottesville is an aerobic graveyard.
Just crazy all the negativity regarding UVA….it’s a great place!
Way to go TESS! Girl on 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Crushing it in Germany!⭐️🇺🇸👏🏻❤️
I still say Mary T’s 200 fly was one of the greatest swims ever.
Feels like she’s been on the verge of a breakthrough for a while. Really nice to see it come to fruition.
Virginia is on fire. Look at their medal count!
F*CK yes! Tess!! Feel this was a long time coming, so happy to see her with a nice drop!!
Did this knock out Mary T from the top five Americans ever?
Looks like. 44 years in top 5 is pretty good
Ledecky in the mile unless Summer ever swims it.
I think she was already knocked out, top 10 according to USA Swimming (with Howley added):
The USA Swimming database, not always 100% accurate, showed Mary T at 8th all-time USA, so now she’d be 9th since the Howley time isn’t updated yet.
Wow
