South Africa’s Jessica Thompson will be joining the Virginia women’s program in the fall of 2026.
After careful consideration I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Virginia! I am so grateful to GOD and then to my family, friends and coaches for all the support helping me get to this point. A special thanks to coach Todd and the staff at UVA for this amazing opportunity!

Thompson recently swam at the 2025 World Junior Championships in Otopeni, where she qualified for two event finals in the 50 back and 50 fly events. She finished 4th in the 50 back, touching in 28.06, just under a tenth off the 27.98 best time she set in the semifinals. In the 50 fly, she was 8th in 26.71. Her best time, again, came from the semifinals at 26.09.
Thompson also swam the 50 free (25.29 – 6th in prelims/scratched semifinals) and 100 back (1:02.13 – 14th).

The Virginia women are the five-time reigning NCAA Champions, and they have won six straight ACC titles. Thompson’s times don’t currently convert to an NCAA qualification in her events, but she has more than a year until her first meet for the Cavaliers and a year-and-a-half until the 2027 ACC Championships, her first conference meet with the team.
Her 50 freestyle would have been 5th on the team last year, and if she continues to get faster, she could be looking at a potential relay swim as a freshman.
She will join a recruiting class of Alyssa Sagle, Roos Rottink, Molly Workman, Caden Martin, Smilte Plytnykaite, Sara Czirjaik, and Olivia Hine.
