Vermont Cruises To Victory Over Merrimack In Season Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont women’s swimming and diving defeated Merrimack in dominating fashion, 159-95, in their annual Military Appreciation Meet presented by Milton Cat Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Catamounts improve to 1-0 on the season while the Warriors fall to 0-1.

“I am really thrilled with the overall performance in our team today,” said head coach Gerry Cournoyer. “They have been working really hard and they had a great energy for today’s meet which is what we were looking for. It was awesome to see our first years compete. We really did not know what they looked like, but they were fantastic today.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Catamounts got off to a strong start to the day in the 200 medley relay with Autumun Bullinger, Natalie SchlemmerHally Laney and Jackie House claiming first in a time of 1:49.35.
  • The second event of the day was the 1000 yard freestyle where the Catamounts secured the top three spots in the event. Emily Rocco took first with a time of 10:53.46 while Ellie Martin finished second in 10:56.14 and teammate Maggie Mantz rounded out the top three with a time of 11:20.18.
  • Rocco earned a second victory in the 500 free finishing in 5:19.49, almost 20 seconds ahead of the next closest swimmer.
  • In the 200 freestyle Vermont continued their dominance taking one, two and three in back-to-back events. House earned her first individual victory of the season finishing in 1:55.42 while teammates Ella Church finished second in 1:56.30 and first year Liesel Greseth finished third in a time of 2:05.13.
  • Autumn Bullinger won her first individual event of the season claiming first in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.99.
  • Vermont took home the top spots in the 100 breast with Lilly Acker claiming first in a time of 1:09.24 and Natalie Schlemmer finishing second in a time of 1:09.43.
  • Vermont earned their third one, two, three finish of the meet in the 200 fly when Hally Laney claimed first (2:07.69), Kara Campbell finished second (2:17.59) and Madison Supple earned third (2:21.01).
  • Two first years in Havana Layton and Jessica Drozdowski earned their first collegiate victory for the Catamounts. Layton claimed first in the 50 free in a time of 24.46 while Drozdowski finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 59.63.
  • House earned her second individual victory of the meet in the 100 free finishing in a time of 52.81.
  • Acker earned her second individual victory on the day claiming first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:28.21.
  • Emma Wainwright started where she left off last season finishing first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:09.90 a full two seconds ahead of the field.
  • Laney ended the day strong for Vermont winning the final individual event, the 200 IM, finishing in a time of 2:12.03, a full seven seconds ahead of the next closest swimmer.

UPCOMING
Following Saturday’s matchup, the Catamounts will return to action at the NJIT Invitational on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14. Action for Friday is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and Saturday it will start with the diving portion at 10 a.m. before swimming takes place at 1:30 p.m.  All of the events will be taking place at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center.

HOME MEETS
The Catamounts will have four more meets at Forbush Natatorium during the 2023-24 campaign. Vermont’s next meet at home will be a conference matchup with New Hampshire on Saturday, October 21 at 12 p.m. Following that, the Catamounts will return to Forbush Natatorium on back-to-back weekends when they face UMass on Saturday, December 2 and UConn on Saturday, December 9. Both of those meets are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV. Vermont’s final home meet of the season will be their annual Senior Day presented by MVP Health against Siena on Sunday, January 14. That meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
