2022-23 Open Water U.S. National Team and National Junior Team

USA Swimming unveiled its rosters for the 2022-23 Open Water U.S. National Team and National Junior Team on Friday.

Versatile 16-year-old Katie Grimes headlines the National Team, which features the same group of 12 swimmers who represented Team USA at the World Championships this summer in Budapest, Hungary. Grimes’ fifth-place finish in the 10K this year was the second-best showing by an American in the event’s history.

“USA Swimming is really excited to take this group of National Team and National Junior Team athletes into 2023 as we approach the early stages of the Olympic Qualification Process,” USA Swimming Open Water National Team director Bryce Elser said. “This group of athletes has already shown an incredible amount of improvement as we navigated our way through the FINA Marathon World Series, World Championships, and World Junior Championships in 2022. The grit required to train for and compete in open water is incredible, and it has been an absolute honor to work with these athletes.”

Grimes’ club teammate, 15-year-old Sandpipers of Nevada standout Claire Weinstein, is the one of two defending world junior champions on the National Junior Team roster along with fellow 15-year-old Nathan Szobota. Weinstein and Szobota both won world junior titles in the 5K this year, but Weinstein will be making the jump up to the 7.5K next year.

Blair Stoneburg (10K), Mary McKenna (10K), and Brice Barrieault (10K) are the newcomers on the National Junior Team while the rest are returners. Unsurprisingly, the Las Vegas-based Sandpipers of Nevada club is the most-represented across the two teams with four swimmers (Grimes, Weinstein, Barrieault, and Luke Ellis).

So, since there are two Worlds before the Olympics….from which one will they decide who goes to Paris in the 10K? Usually of course it’s the top 10 from the worlds preceding the Olympics
