USA Men’s Water Polo Defeats New Zealand, Women Fall To Australia

The USA Men’s National Team defeated New Zealand 18-3 to open play at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament. Alex Bowen (Santee, CA/Stanford/NYAC) scored four goals to lead the USA attack. Drew Holland (Orinda, CA/Stanford/Lamorinda) and Alex Wolf (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/Bruin) combined for eight saves in net. Team USA jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and a 7-1 advantage at halftime. They exploded for eight goals in the third quarter to put the match away, adding three goals in the fourth on the way to the 18-3 victory. Team USA went 7/17 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties with New Zealand going 2/10 on power plays and no penalty attempts.

Auckland, New Zealand – April 3 – The USA Women’s National Team fell to Australia 9-8 to start play at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament. Stephania Haralabidis (Athens, Greece/USC/NYAC) scored three goals in the loss with Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/Stanford/San Diego Shores) posting six saves. Team USA got off to good start grabbing a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was even with each team delivering two goals before Australia surged ahead in the third with a four goal outburst. The Aussies outscored Team USA 2-1 in the fourth quarter to take a one goal victory.

The United States went 7/13 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while Australia went 3/6 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties. Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, CA/Stanford/NYAC) drew seven exclusions in the match.
