UNLV Picks Up Verbal Commitment from Ohio’s Christian Sobczak

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas men’s swimming and diving team will be adding another swimmer to its class of 2019 with the verbal commitment of Christian Sobczak from Toledo, Ohio.

Sobczak is a 6’4” backstroke/IM specialist who swims for the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club and St. Francis de Sales High School. He is a three-time OHSAA Division I state qualifier in the 100 backstroke and a two-time qualifier in the 200 IM.

At the 2014 Ohio High School state championship meet in February, Sobczak placed fourth in both his individual events with a 50.23 in the 100 back (a 3-second improvement from his sophomore year) and a 1.51:93 in the IM (a 6-second drop).

Sobczak was also a member of St. Francis de Sales’ state record-setting 200 free relay team and swam the anchor leg on its second-place finishing 400 free relay. His short course times include:

50 free – 21.57
50 back – 24.47
100 back – 50.23
200 back – 1.54:12
100 breast – 59.36
100 fly – 50.37
200 IM – 1.51:93
400 IM – 4.10:76

Sobczak told SwimSwam how he came to choose UNLV: “I was not convinced at all until I went for my official visit, but the team had a great ‘family’ feel to it and the coaches are amazing! The campus is beautiful and the school really just had everything I was looking for. I can’t wait to get out there and throw down some times!”
