Salisbury, Md. — The UMBC Women’s Swimming team snapped Salisbury’s nearly six-year home unbeaten streak with a dominant 148-114 dual meet win on Saturday afternoon at Maggs Pool
The events were contested in a 25-meter pool.
The Retrievers set six pool records en route to handing the Seagulls their first dual meet loss since January 11, 2020, a span of 17 dual meets.
Ashley Gutshall set four pool records in winning her four events: 50 free (pool record 26.61), 100 free (pool record 58.83), anchor on the 200 medley relay (pool record 1:58.99) and starter on the 200 free relay (pool record 1:47.80).
She was joined on the 200 medley relay by Alice Marini, Ula Parrill and Erma Duratovic, and her 200 free relay team comprised of Duratovic, Claire Oettinger and Bruna de Padua.
Marini nearly matched Gutshall as she set three pool records and won all four of her events: 200 fly (2:23.29), 200 back (pool record 2:18.13), 200 IM (pool record 2:22.16) and was the starter on the 200 medley relay (pool record 1:58.99).
de Padua won the other two events she swam in: 400 free (4:36.47), 200 free (2:09.83).
Kolby Reese won the 800 free in 9:28.78 and finished second behind de Padua in the 400 free. Parill added a pair of silvers in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while Duratovic finished second in the 50 free and the 100 fly.
The Retrievers do not compete again until January 24 when they host Frostburg State for a Senior Day dual meet at 1 p.m.
Salisbury, Md. — The UMBC Men’s Swimming team won 12 of 14 events and broke nine pool records en route to a convincing 159-103 win over host Salisbury on Saturday afternoon.
The events were contested in a 25 meter pool.
Freshman Quinn Marchionini continued his tremendous debut campaign, winning all three events he competed in pool record times. He won the 100 back in 55.06, the 200 back in 2:03.42 and was the starting leg in the 200 medley relay (1:41.12). His opening 50 back in that relay was also a pool record (25.37). He was joined on that winning relay by Sean Neils, Stefano Perez and Braden Weise, each of whom won at least one other individual event.
Weise won and set the pool record in both the 50 free (23.09) and the 100 free (51.34). He was also joined by Perez, Neils and Axel Mori on the winning 200 free relay team in a pool record time of 1:33.00.
Perez took first in the 100 fly in a time of 56.72, while Neils won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.81.
Andrew McEachern (pool record 1:53.82) and Tyler Kay (1:56.30) went 1-2 in the 200 free, Elliot Fielder won the 200 breaststroke (2:22.34) and finished second behind Neils in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.81). Felipe Taveira Lira set the pool record en route to the gold in the 200 IM, with Kay finishing in second just behind him (2:08.35).
UMBC does not compete again until January 24 when they host Frostburg State for a Senior Day dual meet at 1 p.m.

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women’s swimming team endured a rare home setback, falling to the UMBC Chesapeake Retrievers 148-114 on Saturday afternoon at Maggs Pool. The loss is the Sea Gulls’ first in a dual meet at home since Jan. 11, 2020, against Mary Washington, and snaps a 17-meet winning streak within the friendly confines.
MEET NOTES
- Mackenzie Gula earned four medals on the day, including half of SU’s two golds. Gula won a pair of breaststroke races, touching first in the 100-meter breast (1:14.40) and 200 breast (2:39.31), the latter of which broke the Maggs Pool record in the event. She also took silver in the 200 individual medley (2:25.12) and as part of the 200 medley relay.
- Isabelle Salvatore secured a gold, silver, and bronze on the day. She finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.84), second in the 200 back (2:26.41), and third as part of the 200 medley relay.
- Lily Griffin medaled four times, headlined by a gold in the 100 butterfly (1:04.26). She also won a pair of silvers in the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay and a bronze in the 200 fly (2:25.65).
- Salisbury earned a silver and bronze to start the day in the 200 medley relay. Rolling in second at 2:00.77 was the quartet of Logan Bagley, Gula, Griffin, and Rowan O’Donoghue.
- SU also took second place in the 200 free relay, riding Kaitlyn McGuire, Griffin, Bagley, and O’Donoghue to a 1:50.43 mark.
- In all, the Sea Gulls earned four gold medals, seven silver, and nine bronze in a matchup with a Division I program in UMBC. SU doubled its point total from its last matchup against the Chesapeake Retrievers (57) in Jan. 2024.
MAGGS POOL RECORDS

Salisbury now enters the winter hiatus and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, at home against Franklin & Marshall. First events from Maggs Pool are slated for 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to be held before the meet.

MEET NOTES
- Owen Mahoney won two of the Sea Gulls’ three gold medals on the afternoon. Mahoney rolled to victory in the 400-meter freestyle (4:06.77) and 800 free (8:35.04), shaving 21 seconds off his previous best time in the latter.
- Cameron Byrd secured a gold, silver, and bronze, headlined by a victory in the 200 butterfly (2:07.82). He placed second in the 100 fly (56.80) and third as part of the 200 medley relay.
- Matt Merke reeled in a silver and two bronzes, taking second in the 800 free (8:42.38) and third in the 400 free (4:13.81) and 200 individual medley (2:11.19).
- Salisbury opened the day with a silver and bronze in the 200 medley relay. Capturing second in 1:41.98 were Mason Potts, Aidan Loehr, Michael Paulos, and Michael DeSimone.
- The Sea Gulls closed with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay, with Potts, Everett Rachael, DeSimone, and Loehr teaming up for a 1:33.50 clock.
- SU won a total of three gold medals, eight silver, and eight bronze against its Division I foe, nearly doubling up its point total from its previous matchup with UMBC (57) in Jan. 2024.
The Sea Gulls will hit the water for the first time in 2026 at their Senior Day meet against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 17. Following a pre-meet ceremony, the first race at Maggs Pool will begin at 1 p.m.
