Felix LaFortune broke the UIC record in 1-meter diving and led the Flames men to wins over UChicago and Wabash on Senior Day at UIC Natatorium Saturday afternoon.

LaFortune, who won both diving events for the fourth time this season, bested the previous record by almost 10 points.  It had stood since Woody Lord’s 2012 performance.

Before the meet, UIC coaches and staff honored the 11 seniors who were competing for the final time in their home pool.  Three seniors were event winners, and four more had a plethora of second and third place finishes.

“Senior Day is always emotional, but I thought our kids did a great job of handling the emotions and getting down to the business of focusing on the swimming,” Tim Loeffler said.  “Our guys had a good day against a Chicago team that is always nationally competitive in D-III and Wabash recently beat Milwaukee from the Horizon League.  We were shorthanded on the girls’ side with some people that usually score big points for us out sick today.  The divers will get one more competition but starting now for the swimmers we are focused on getting ready for conference.”

On the women’s side, Chicago topped UIC.  The Flames had been undefeated at home this season.  Each side finished the year with just one home loss.

The Wabash swimming and diving team traveled to Chicago Saturday to compete in its final dual meet of the 2019-2020 season. The Little Giants lost 204-93 to the University of Chicago, the eighth-ranked team in the current NCAA Division III men’s poll, as well as taking a 220-80 loss to the NCAA Division I program and meet host from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Wesley Slaughter raced to a pair of first-place finishes at the meet. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.03. Slaughter added another victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a winning time of 45.57.

The Little Giants’ 200-yard medley relay team of Justin DuszaHunter JonesJan Dziadek, and Slaughter raced to third place with a combined time of 1:35.00 to open the meet.

Jones finished third overall in the 200-yard breaststroke by finishing the race in 2:08.69. He added a fourth-place finish individually in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.06. Daren Glore completed the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 10:08.14 to place third overall for Wabash. Glore also scored a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:52.30. Dziadek captured fifth place in the 100-yard backstroke by finishing in 52.58. He placed fifth in the 100-yard individual medley by completing the race in 53.85. Kevin Sheridan finished the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.16 to place fifth overall.

The Little Giants closed out the meet by finishing fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Jones, Ryan Sacco, Sheridan, and Ricky Damron combined for a time of 3:24.88.

“Today was our final tune-up prior to the conference championship meet in February,” Wabash head coach Will Bernhardt said. “I was pleased with how we performed. We had a couple of event wins against some tough competition. Wes’ wins in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle came against a Division III powerhouse in the University of Chicago and against the Division I team from UIC. Those were a couple of fun races for us. We came close in a couple of other races. Hunter Jones swam really well today. Jan Dziadek had a really good day with his backstroke and individual medley. And our relays performed very well for where we are at in this point of the season. I’m very happy with the 200 medley relay. It was a good leadoff swim and gave us some momentum.

“We’re in a pretty good spot right now as a team. We have 18 days to finish preparations for the conference meet. We had a great amount of fun on deck today and enjoyed the trip up to Chicago.”

The North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships begin February 12. The four-day meet will take place at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
