UConn Swim and Dive Holds Final Tuneup Over The Weekend

The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were both in action Saturday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, as the women faced Yale in a scrimmage, while the men participated in an intra-squad event.

On the women’s side, UConn saw a couple of impressive performances from its freshman. Christine Pederson performed well in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke event, while fellow freshman Sophie Nothnagle had a strong showing in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly.

“We were mostly happy with the results in terms of a scrimmage format,” Connecticut swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “We used this meet as preparation for the West Point meet ahead next week.”

Two other Huskies had a strong day for the women’s team as well. Junior Chinyere Pigot had a solid time in the 50-yard freestyle, and sophomore Laura Hyland had a great swim in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Jeff Magin swam well for the men in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, while Felix Samuel, a transfer from the University of Minnesota, had an impressive time in the 50-yard free stroke.

Other highlights for the men Saturday came in the butterfly events. Freshman Chris Girg posted a solid time in the 200-yard fly, and senior Asher Garcia performed well in the 100-yard.

The UConn men and women return to the pool a week from today when they kick off the regular season against Army at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
