UC Santa Barbara Dominates Pacific, Gaucho Men Now 5-0

Stockton, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara men’s (5-0) and women’s (6-2) swim dominated against the Pacific Tigers in a dual meet on Saturday. The final score for the men was 193-68 and the women’s score was 183-76.

Both men and women took the 200 Free and 200 Medley Relays. The long distance events were also quite successful for the Gauchos with the men taking the top four spots in the 500 Free and top three in the 1000 Free. The women also claimed the top three spots in the 1000 Free, 200 Free, and 50 Free.

For the women’s squad, freshman Samantha Banos continues to dominate, placing first in all her events: 50 Free (23.78), 100 Fly (55.39), and 200 IM (2:05.7). Other first place finishes include: Annie Andres (1000 Free, 10:28.9), Michelle Tekawy in the 200 Free (1:55.44), Ashley Ray (100 Breast, 1:04.48), Maelynn Lawrence in the 200 Fly (2:03.16), Kristin Bartlett (200 Back, 2:04.97), Katie Nugent for 200 Breast (2:21.13).

Rounding out the effort for the women, second-place finishes came from Cami CollinsGillian FlathSilvia Faraboschi with two, Reagan Nibarger, and Hannah Joseph. Additionally, third place finishes came from Sophia Ryan, who had two, Alyssa LundPaige GambettaAmelia Hammer, and Tyryn Empremsilapa.

On the men’s side, UCSB won every event save for one. Matthew Driscoll took first in the 100 (49.28) and 200 Back (1:50.09) while it was Alec Cullen for the 100 (55.52) and 200 Breast (2:00.01). Matt Vinh went the distance, taking the 500 (4:34.59) and 1000 (9:30.16) Free. Other first place finishes came from Austin Sparrow in the 200 Free (1:39.33), Justin Wong (200 Fly, 1:53.18), Sean Gutowski in the 50 Free (20.56), Zachary Tamusaitis (100 Fly, 49.00), and Kyle Brill in the 200 IM (1:49.95).

Second place finishes came from Kennan Hotchkiss, Dominic Falcon, Corban McIntosh with two, Billy Picht, and Connor Martilla who also had two third-place finishes.

UCSB will return to competition next weekend at UNLV from January 27-28 to take on the Rebels as well as the Wyoming Cowboys & Cowgirls.

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men’s swim team (3-5) finished the dual meet season at home on Saturday, dropping a 193-68 decision to UC Santa Barbara (5-0). The women’s squad (4-6), which will return home next week to host UC Davis, lost a 183-76 contest to the Gauchos (4-2) on Saturday.

In the men’s competition, senior Dylan Parente was the lone event winner for the Tigers, capturing first in the 100 free with a time of 45.02. Junior Alex Kurotori took second in the 200 back; sophomore Mitchell Hopper was second in the 100 fly; and junior Aiden Scott finished second in the 200 IM. The 200 free relay of Parente, Hopper, Franklin Fitzpatrick and Kutorori finished the meet with a strong race, finishing second, falling by just .21 to the top Gaucho relay.

In the women’s competition, freshman Diana Chan was a double winner, capturing the 100 back in 57.86 and then the 500 free in 5:03.68. Sophomore Paige Sondgeroth won the 100 free in 51.42 and was second in the 100 breast. Sophomore Kelly Kermoian was second in the 200 back, and junior Caitlin Tan was second in the 100 fly.

“Santa Barbara is fast, and they have depth,” said Head Coach Katelyne Herrington after the competition. “They swam well today and were tough to chase down, but we managed to pull out some big swims, especially on the women’s side, winning three events, plus one on the men’s side. Those wins were huge for our team as we prepare for MPSF Championships.”

As the final combined dual meet of the season, the seniors from both the men’s and women’s teams were honored. The lone senior on the women’s team is Jessica Clark. The men’s team honored six seniors including Nicholas CiscoFranklin FitzpatrickRichard LewisChristian SchroederJonathan Tan and Nalex Young.

The Tiger women’s team returns to Chris Kjeldsen Pool next Saturday, Jan. 28, for a women’s-only meet against UC Davis. Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational on February 3-4 as the final preparation for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, which will be contested February 15-18 at the Marquerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo, Calif.
