UC San Diego Women’s Water Polo Set to Host Aztecs in Harper Cup

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 10 UC San Diego women’s water polo team will host No. 15 San Diego State in the annual Harper Cup. The Tritons won the last Harper Cup and look to keep the trophy in La Jolla for another season.

ATTENDING THE GAMES
Per the current COVID-19 guidelines set by the state of California, the County of San Diego and the Big West Conference, fans are not permitted to attend home games at Canyonview Aquatic Center. For more information on UC San Diego ticket policies, visit UCSDTritons.com/tickets.

COVERING THE TRITONS
Media members wishing to cover a UC San Diego game in-person at Canyonview Aquatic Center this season must notify a member of the Athletics Communication staff no later than 24 hours before start of a contest. All media members will need to complete a UC San Diego symptom screening form on the day of game prior to arriving on campus.

ABOUT THE HARPER CUP
The Harper Cup honors longtime men’s head water polo coach Denny Harper. Harper played collegiately at San Diego State and coached the women’s team at UC San Diego from 1985 to 1999. Current San Diego State Head Coach Carin Crawford played at UC San Diego under Denny Harper.

The inaugural Harper Cup game between the crosstown foes started in 2002. The Tritons have won the past four Harper Cups. Bennett Bugelli was named the MVP in the Tritons 9-5 victory in the 2019 Harper Cup after recording a then career high of 14 saves.

LAST TIME OUT
The Tritons opened up Big West Conference action with a 10-9 win over Hawaii. This was the first victory over Hawaii since 2014. Grace Pevehouse had a game high four goals while Annika Arroyo and Tera Richardson each had hat tricks. In game two, the Tritons fell 12-8. Arroyo had a career high four goals.

BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arroyo was named Big West player of the week on March 17 after scoring seven goals in the Triton’s two games against Hawaii. Previously, Bugelli was named Big West Player of the Week on February 24.

USE CREDIT UNION TRITON ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Arroyo was also named the Triton Athlete of the Week on March 15. Previously, Ciara Franke was named Triton Athlete of the Week on March 1. She recorded a hat trick in game one against CBU and added two field blocks and an assist. Franke has played good two meter defense for the Tritons in the early part of the season.

2020 BIG WEST SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Franke was named UC San Diego’s 2020 Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the year. Each institution is awarded one male and female award winner. The award acknowledges their accomplishments on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities.

SIZING UP THE AZTECS
The Aztecs are 2-12 on the season with 12 of their games coming against teams currently in the top 10. Six of their losses came by one goal including their 9-8 loss to the Tritons in sudden death overtime. The Aztecs secured a 7-6 overtime win over No. 5 Michigan on March 7.

100 GOALS CLUB
Grace Pevehouse (151) and Ciara Franke (131) have scored over 100 goals in their careers. Next closest player is Jessee Ransone with 64.

RECORD WATCH

With 523 career saves, Bennett Bugelli ranks tenth all time. Currently, Reilly Gallagher ranks ninth with 530 saves.

HEAD COACH BRAD KREUTZKAMP
Kreutzkamp is in his 12th season as Head Coach of the women’s team. He has a career record of 239-165. With seven more wins, he will overtake Denny Harper as winningest coach in program history.
