U.S. Open Qualifier Kate Fedor Sends Verbal To Penn State For Fall 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

U.S. Open finalist Kate Fedor has announced her verbal commitment to compete for Penn State University beginning in the fall of 2026. She confirmed the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am so honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Penn State University! Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me along the way. Especially a huge thank you to the Penn State coaching staff for giving me this amazing opportunity! WE ARE!

The Connecticut native is currently a senior at Norwalk-McMahon High School in Norwalk and trains year-round with Zeus Swim Team, excelling at middle-distance freestyle and backstroke.

Fedor competed with her high school team for the first time this season. At the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) State Championships this past November, she won the 100 back title in a season-best 56.45 and took 15th in the 50 free (24.96). On the relay front, she helped the 200 medley and 400 free relays take fourth place, providing a 26.86 backstroke lead-off and 53.15 free split.

While she’s opted to stay local for most competitions, Fedor did qualify and compete at the 2024 U.S. Open, where she placed 20th in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.72.

Most of Fedor’s best times were set a few years ago, with her 51.92 in the 100 free coming from December 2021 and her 1:52.29 in the 200 free from December 2022, though her backstroke personal bests are more recent, as she clocked her 200 back lifetime best of 1:59.36 in January 2024 and a 55.64 in the 100 back in February 2024.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 Freestyle: 51.92
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:52.29
  • 100 Backstroke: 55.64
  • 200 Backstroke: 1:59.36

A Division I program, Penn State competes in the Big Ten Conference, with the women’s team placing 12th out of 14 teams at last season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 49.60/1:47.11 in the 100/200 free and 53.97/1:57.84 in the 100/200 back, putting Fedor outside the cutoff in each of her top events.

On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, her lifetime bests would have ranked first in the 200 back, fifth in the 100 back and 200 free, and ninth in the 100 free; she’ll provide immediate help for dual meets and potentially relays if she’s able to get back to her best times.

Currently set to join Fedor in the pool in the fall are Hannah Wilson (back/middle-distance free), Gabi Abruzzo (fly/back), Hailey Marinovich (back/IM), and Sara McNabb (sprint free/fly), who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years. Fedor is the fastest incoming recruit in both both backstrokes as well as the 100 free, though Wilson will complement her well with times of 56.49/1:59.91 in the backstrokes and 51.95/1:50.14 in the freestyles.
