Truckee Girls, Boulder City Boys Make It Four Straight Titles At Nevada 3A State Championships

The standard for 3A swimming in Nevada is still the Truckee girls and the Boulder City boys.

Both teams won their fourth straight state championships at the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association 3A state meet, doing so with relative ease.

The Truckee girls won by 79 points over runner-up Boulder City, while the Boulder City boys were 65 points ahead of runner-up Truckee.

Girls’ Recap

Truckee was led individually by junior Zoey McClaren, who first repeated as champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.76. McClaren later captured the 500 free in a time of 5:13.47.

The other multi-event winner was Virgin Valley junior Kyra Jensen, who won her third straight title in the 50 free, clocking a time of 25.30. She then won the 100 free in 55.26.

Truckee also got individual wins from senior Hayley Hines in the 200 IM (2:19.79), senior Jojo Wurzelbacher in the 100 back (1:07.71) and sophomore Fiona Kimber in the 100 breast (1:14.62).

Hines, Wurzelbacher and Kimber were also instrumental in Truckee sweeping the three relay events.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of  Wurzelbacher (31.75), Kyla McCarthy Smith (34.96), Jane Paganelli (29.63) and Addie Schaller (26.07) helped Truckee win in a time of 2:02.41.

The 200 free relay was won by Truckee in a time of 1:48.67 behind the team of Kimber (27.06), Adriana DeLuna (28.02), Smith-McCarthy (27.11) and Hynes (26.58).

In the 400 free relay, Truckee won in a time of 3:58.04 behind the team of Hynes (58.01), Paganelli (1:02.19), Kimber (1:01.40) and Schaller (56.44).

Neveah Hubert, a junior at Debbie Smith High School, won the 100 fly in a time of 1:03.12.

Boys’ Recap

Boulder City won on the strength of its relays, sweeping the titles in all three events.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Tate Orton (23.79), Canyon Lenon (28.63), Cruz Stevens (26.22), and Ayden Villa (23.36) won in a time of 1:42.00.

The 200 free relay was won by Boulder City’s squad of Duncan McLaren (22.69), Stevens (27.04), Cameron Riley (24.24) and Lenon (23.43) in a time of 1:37.40.

In the 400 free relay, Boulder City won in a time of 3:26.52 behind the team of McClaren (48.41), Orton (50.50), Jackson Smith (56.82) and Villa (50.79).

Individually, the multi-event winners of the day were Truckee sophomore Caleb Edwards and Coral sophomore Yushi Kono.

Edwards swept the sprint freestyles, claiming the 50 free in 22.37 and the 100 free in 50.39.

Kono won the 100 fly in a time of 51.66, and then later captured the 500 free in 4:45.25.

Other individual event winners were:

  • McClaren, a St. Bonaventure commit, won his third straight title in the 200 free, clocking a time of 1:46.56.
  • Thomas Solaris, a freshman from The Meadows Upper School, claimed the 200 IM in 1:59.69.
  • Orton, a senior for Boulder City, won the 100 back in 51.97 after finishing 2nd last year.
  • Lenon, also a senior for Boulder City, took the 100 breast in a time of 1:01.16.

Just remember, these high school kids only swim 2-3 months/ yr. at best. Times for state meets for rural schools without age group programs have changed little during the past 40-50 yr. as a result.
