Tessa Giele Closes Out Dutch SC Championships With Two Additional Golds

2025 DUTCH SC CHAMPIONSHIPS

We saw the third and final day of the 2025 Dutch Short Course Championships take place last night in The Hague, with swimmers vying for solid performances to end their 2025 year of racing.

Tiago Fonseca Gomes continued his successful meet, following up Saturday’s 50m back and 200m freestyle victories with an additional win in the 400m free.

The 18-year-old stopped the clock at a time of 3:45.04 to beat the field by a narrow margin, with runner-up Lucas Peters getting to the wall a hair behind in 3:45.08.

Austin Namesnik produced a mark of 3:47.37 as the bronze medalist.

Gomes’ lifetime best remains at the 3:42.57 notched at this year’s European Short Course Championships.

The men’s 100m breaststroke saw Jason van den Berg get it done for gold, registering one of three sub-minute times in the final.

Van den Berg hit 58.83, off his PB of 58.27 from last month, to hold a healthy advantage over Loek Huyghelier who snagged bronze in 59.04.

Luca Janssen rounded out the podium in 59.04.

23-year-old Tessa Giele captured a pair of golds to conclude her campaign, topping the podium in both the women’s 50m back and 100m fly events.

In the former, Giele clocked a swift effort of 26.46 as the sole swimmer of the field to delve under the 27-second barrier.

In the latter event, Giele punched a result of 56.92 to beat the field by well over two seconds. She’s been as fast as 54.66 in her career, a time she achieved en route to earning silver at last year’s Short Course World Championships.

Additional Notes

  • Brandon van den Berg found success in the men’s 50m freestyle, grabbing the gold in a time of 21.15. That was just .05 off the lifetime best he produced in Lublin, Poland. Sean Niewold was the silver medalist in 21.52 and Marcel Hofstede also landed on the podium in 21.84, good enough for bronze.
  • Niewold upgraded to gold in the 50m fly, however, turning in a time of 22.65 to get the job done. That tied his best-ever performance put on the books last year. Olympic teammate Thomas Verhoeven secured runner-up honors in 23.13 and Jesse Puts logged 23.22 for 3rd place.
  • Giovanni Phillipson established a new Dutch Junior Record on his way to topping the men’s 100m IM podium. He hit 53.48 for the gold medal.
