Summer McIntosh Drops Out of Remaining World Cup Stops Due To Undisclosed Illness

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP

  • Stop 1: Carmel, Ind. – October 10-12, 2025
  • Stop 2: Westmont, Ill. – October 17-19, 2025
  • Stop 3: Toronto – October 23-25, 2025

Canadian superstar Summer McIntosh is out of all three stops of the 2025 World Cup, including her scheduled homecoming in Toronto in less than two weeks.

McIntosh, who recently changed training bases and joined Bob Bowman at the University of Texas last month, withdrew from the opening leg of the series in Carmel late last week, and now, she’s dropped out of the entire series due to an undisclosed illness, as first reported by CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux.

A spokesperson for McIntosh told CBC Sports that “she’s especially disappointed” to miss out on the Toronto leg of the series in front of her hometown crowd, but hasn’t been able to train in recent days and plans on focusing on rest and recovery in the coming weeks.

McIntosh, 19, is coming off a phenomenal last 12 months that’s included winning three short course world titles in December 2024, breaking SCM world records in the women’s 400 free, 200 fly and 400 IM, and then following up by winning four gold and one bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships in July, claiming titles in the 400 free, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. She also set new long course world records in the 400 free, 200 IM and 400 IM at the Canadian Swimming Trials one month earlier.

Coming into the World Cup, McIntosh would have to be regarded as one of the main favorites to win the overall series title (with $100,000 on the line), but in her absence, the race opens up a bit.

After the opening leg, American Gretchen Walsh holds down the top spot in the series on the women’s side with 59.1 points, followed closely by teammate Kate Douglass (58.9) and Australian Kaylee McKeown (56.8).

McIntosh’s withdrawal also increases the chances of swimmers like Regan Smith (200 fly), Lani Pallister (400 free) and Alex Walsh (200 IM) to secure Triple Crown bonuses for winning the same event at all three legs of the series. Douglass would have to be looked as the 200 IM favorite, regardless of if McIntosh was in the field or not, but she opted not to race the event in Carmel.

The second leg of the World Cup series continues this weekend in Westmont, Ill., (Oct. 17-19), and will wrap up in Toronto (Oct. 23-25).

If it’s mono were there any other swimmers she’s around that have had it lately that could have given it to her? You are still able to pass on the virus for years after you get it.

Better to scratch the series than come back <100% healthy and have a series of unenjoyable sub-par meets (and get roasted in SwimSwam comments). A good decision, especially coming into winter.

Texas is a hotbed of communicable illnesses especially since its government and large swath of population rejected vaccines

Could be. Hubi and Leon both reportedly suffer from it as well.
