Summer Juniors qualifier Grayson Brewster has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Florida State University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to Florida State University to continue my academic and athletic career! I first want to give my thanks to God and his guidance, my parents, sisters, family and friends for always being supportive and being there for me through this process. I want to thank Coach Sean and Coach Dave at MSA and a huge thank you to Coach Neal and all coaching staff at FSU for giving me this opportunity to be a Seminole… GO NOLES!

A junior at Weddington High School in Matthews, NC, Brewster has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming and diving team since her freshman year. She also swims club with Mecklenburg Swim Association, where she specializes in backstroke and sprint freestyle.

Brewster just wrapped up a 2025-26 short course season that saw her drop over a second in the 50 free, a third of a second in the 100 back, and nearly a second and a half in the 200 back. She kicked things off at Winter Juniors – East in December, her first year qualifying for the meet. She placed 33rd in the 100 back (54.87 – PB) and 43rd in the 200 back (1:59.83 – SB).

She carried that momentum into the NCHSAA 7A State meet a month later, where she cracked the top 16 for the first time by taking bronze in the 100 back (54.88). She also placed sixth in the 100 fly (57.47), breaking a minute for only the second time in her career, while helping Weddington to bronze in the 200 medley relay (26.18 leadoff) and sixth in the 200 free relay (24.44 split).

Brewster closed out her short course season at Speedo Sectionals – Cary, where she clocked career bests across her primary events. She made the ‘A’ final at a sectionals meet for the first time, finishing fifth in the 200 back (1:56.70), and also placed 12th in the 100 back (54.74) and 29th in the 50 free (24.47), while cracking the top 40 in a pair of off events, the 100 fly (36th – 57.91) and 200 IM (39th – 2:08.91).

Beyond the short course pool, Brewster made her Summer Junior Nationals (LCM) debut last July, placing 28th in the 200m back (2:17.77 – PB), 59th in the 100m back (1:05.38), and 69th in the 50m back (30.70 – SB). Her 100 back lifetime best of 1:04.59 came a few weeks prior at the North Carolina Senior Championships, and her 50 back PB sits at 30.65 from May 2024.

A Division I program, Florida State competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the women’s team placing 10th out of 15 teams at this past season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 52.61/1:55.26 in the 100/200 back and 22.56 in the 50 free, putting Brewster’s current bests outside the cutoffs.

On the team itself, Brewster would have ranked second in the 200 back and third in the 100 back, projecting her to be one of the Seminoles’ top backstroke competitors. She joins an FSU backstroke group that had two swimmers combine for three scoring swims at ACCs. Sarah Evans, a ‘B’ finalist in both backstroke events, is graduating, though Brewster is set to overlap one season with 100 back ‘C’ finalist Alice Velden (51.48/2:00.48). Samantha Villacis, the only other public 2026 or 2027 commit heading to FSU under 56/2:00, arrives next fall with bests of 54.29/1:58.52.

Brewster joins 22.9/50.8 sprint freestyler Leah Chin and 23.4/50.9 free, 1:03.4/2:15.8 breast Aidyn Reese in committing to the Seminoles’ class of 2031 so far.
