Summer Juniors Qualifier Claire McLean Verbals to Duke for 2023-24

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Claire McLean from Santa Monica, California has announced her intention to swim and study at Duke University beginning in the fall of 2023.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic pursuits at Duke University!  After the amazing campus visit with Coach Dan Colella, where I had the opportunity to engage with the Duke students, I knew it would be a great fit. I remain grateful for the continued support from my family, friends, and coaches. Go Blue Devils!😈💙”

A junior at Harvard-Westlake School, McLean is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American who specializes in sprint freestyle. She made our Best of the Rest section of the Way Too Early list of high school recruits from the class of 2023 for her 50/100 free times.

McLean won the 100 free (50.37) and was runner-up in the 50 free (23.37) at the 2021 CIF Southern Section Division II Championships last May. Her best times in those events date from December 2019 when she earned a pair of gold medals in the sprint frees at CA/NV Sectionals with 23.18/49.69. This summer, she placed 13th in the 100m free (57.36) and 20th in the 50 (26.76) at Speedo Summer Championships-West. She notched PBs in the 100/200 free and 400 IM at So Cal Invite in July. Two weeks later she competed at Santa Clarita Futures where she placed 4th in the 100 free 57.03, 6th in the 50 free (26.60), 20th in the 200 free (2:07.19), and 28th in the 200 IM (2:25.28). Her 50 free and 200 IM were lifetime bests.

SCY times:

  • 50 free – 23.18
  • 100 free – 49.69
  • 200 free – 1:50.24

McLean does her club swimming with Los Angeles Swim Club. With most of Duke’s top sprinters graduating either this year (Shayna Hollander, Rachel Peroni) or next (Sarah Snyder, Olivia Tighe, Alex Bumpas, Emma Shuppert), McLean will have ample opportunity to be a big impact player for the Blue Devils as soon as she suits up.
