The penultimate day of action at the 2025 Queensland Short Course Championships unfolded today from Brisbane with multiple rising age group stars mingling with their veteran counterparts.
Visiting South African Matt Sates was among those competing, with the 22-year-old Olympian winning the men’s open 100m freestyle as well as the 100m butterfly.
In the former, Sates clocked a time of 48.20 to get to the wall first, splitting 11.11/12.27/12.49/12.33 in the process.
That was enough to hold off Somerville House Aquatics swimmer Kalani Ireland who settled for silver a hair behind in 48.37 while Kiwi swimmer Zac Dell rounded out the podium in 48.85.
As for former University of Georgia Bulldog Sates, his effort checked in as the 3rd-best time of his career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 47.14 logged at the 2021 South African Short Course Championships. That rendered him his nation’s 9th-swiftest performer of all time.
As for the 100m fly, the event saw Sates produce a mark of 51.97 as the sole competitor under the 52-second barrier.
He beat the pack by just under a second, as Logan Vikings’ Lucas Humeniuk notched 52.72 as the runner-up, followed by William Jordan of Brisbane Grammar who bagged the bronze in 52.99.
Koa Stotz of Somerset made some noise in the 14-year-old boys’ 100m freestyle final, ripping a time of 50.34.
Splitting 11.52/12.83/13.22/12.77, Stotz handily defeated the field, with the next-closest swimmer represented by Bryce Krause of Fairholme who hit 51.92.
Entering this meet, Stotz’s personal best rested at the 53.29 established just last month at the SGC Short Course Championships so he ripped that to shreds with today’s performance.
According to the Swimming Australia list of Age Records, Stotz erased the former benchmark for his age group, a standard which stood at the 50.61 Te Haumi put on the books in 2009. His time also erased Thomas Hauck‘s previous Queensland Age Record of 50.84 from 2017.
But Krause turned in a new Age Record of his own while racing the 14-year-old boys’ 100m backstroke.
Krause stopped the clock at a mark of 54.58 (12.62/13.41/14.14/14.41) to beat his fellow swimmers by nearly 4 seconds en route to victory.
Krause previously held the Queensland Agee Record in this event, courtesy of the 55.59 nabbed just last month.
His time today ties Olympian and World Championships swimmer Joshua Edwards-Smith‘s overall Aussie Age Record of 54.58 established in 2017.
Additional winners on the day included Lincoln Wearing, following up his monster 800m free from night one with a victory in the 15-year-old boys’ 100m free.
He posted 50.05 to clear the pack by one-and-a-half seconds, just off his Aussie Age Record from last month.
Max Cunningham of Brisbane Grammar reaped gold in the 16-year-old boys’ 100m free, punching a result of 48.65.
Cunningham now ties Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers as the 2nd-quickest 16-year-old Australian boy ever. Only fellow Olympian Flynn Southam has been swifter at that age, owning the record at 48.05 from the 2021 season.

Boys junior breaststroke in Aus is going nuts.
Probably only been like 5 years since only a couple of 14 boys in Australia had been under 30 scm ever.
Backstroke too
2-3 guys simultaneously as well
Stotz takes down Montana’s 50 breast age record 28.36 (prev 28.60). Tarrant swift too with 28.91
Couple more age records:
14 yo Cohen Tarrant in the 200 breast 2:16.79
14 yo Bryce Krause in the 50 back 24.81
Krause’s underwaters are so good.
Re Krause to put in perspective Issac Cooper next best in this age group at 25.60
He’s done quite a demolition job on that particular record.
He had another crack in the opens race, just off the time with a 24.89
Ollie Moclair per results database broke the 17 yr Age 50M free Cameron McEvoy record last weekend 21.69 vs 21.83 nice warm up for world juniors
