Girls Meet

The girls of St. Catherine’s School started off the meet with a bang.  The team of Jessica Beck, Jacquelyn Maly, Grace Wielar, Abby Nicholas lowered the state meet record by almost two seconds, touching in 1:46.03.  That was St. Catherine’s only win of the meet, but they put enough swimmers into the rest of the finals to end up with a 31 point margin of victory over runner up Trinity Episcopal School.

The Madeira School earned three wins, an individual win the 100 fly by junior Izzy Gati, in 53.89, and two relay wins.  Gati, Giovi Moriarty, Sofie Davis, and Maddie Heilbrun combined for a 1:36.63 in the 200 free relay.  Meaghan Doyle swapped in for Moriarty, on the 400 free relay, which Madeira took in 3:31.63.

Three different girls doubled up on individual event victories.  Flint Hill junior Jasmine Hellmer took the wins in the 200 IM (2:02.13) and the 100 free (50.56).  Bishop Ireton senior Anna Shumate won the 50 free in 23.70 and the 100 breast in 1:03.29, a new meet record.  Bishop O’Connell sophomore Madelyn Donohoe swept the distance events, taking the 200 free in 1:49.72 and the 50 free in 4:49.45.

Trinity was helped to its 2nd place finish with a 1-2 finish in the 100 back, as junior Sophie Svoboda just touched out senior Meghan Burton 55.80 to 55.87 .

Boys Meet

St. Catherine’s brother school, St. Christopher’s also won their state championship by 31 points over Trinity Episcopal, and also started with a win in the 200 medley relay.  Their team of Sean Hogan, Frost Wood, Townes West, Thomas Branch kicked off the meet by combining for a 1:35.25 victory.

St. Chris’s was led by sophomore Sean Hogan, who touched first in the 200 IM (1:51.54) and the 100 back (49.61).  Trinity Episcopal also got an individual double, courtesy of senior Jacob Johnson.  He swept the distance freestyle with wins in the 200 free (1:41.68) and the 100 free (45.99).  His teammate and fellow senior Vinny Vivadelli took the 500 free in 4:39.52.

Fork Union Military Academy got individual wins from junior Anthony Gemma in the 50 free (21.23) and senior Samer Khalil in the 100 fly (51.63).  St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes senior Brandy Richichi wrapped up the individual events with a 56.90 victory in the 100 breast.

Richichi was also part of  St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes’ winning 200 free relay team, along with Adam Fischer, Baker Casagrande, and Andrew Revers, with a time of 1:25.58.  Trinity Episcopal’s 400 free relay team of Daniel Lynch, Atesh Camurdan, Vivadelli, and Johnson closed out the meet with a 3:10.30 in the 400 free relay.

Note: the Virginia High School League (VHSL), which consists almost entirely of public schools, runs five different state meets, for divisions 2A (smaller schools) to 6A (largest schools).  Additionally, most of the state’s private schools compete as part of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA), which runs its own meet.  We’ll be recapping all six of those meets here.

Thanks for the shout out but Sean. hogan is a sophomore, not a senior!
