May 19th, 2014 News

SportsPro Media, an online hub for everything and anything sports news related, released their “50 Most Marketable Athletes 2014”, and it was no surprise that golden girl Missy Franklin was among the top ten, number eight to be exact.  While she remains an amateur at Cal Berkeley, SportsPro predicts the money to come rolling in when Rio 2016 arrives.

The article recaps the slew of medals Franklin has won over the past two years, including the six gold medals she won at the 2013 World Championships; the most by any American woman.  While her 2014 NCAA Championships was missing some flickers of gold, let’s not forget her mind-boggling 1:40.31 200 free which led to the shattering of the American record.  She then went on to put an exclamation point on the night with an out of this world 1:40.08 split on the Golden Bears’ 800 free relay.  And for the cherry on top, Franklin was the winner of the esteemed Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.

2016 is just around the corner and Franklin is slated to be America’s Golden Girl once again, most likely becoming the face of the Games.  SportsPro estimated a total of 2.5 million dollars being passed up by Franklin after London.  The question now is how much that amount is going to grow by, but the even bigger question is how any sponsor could even think about passing up that stunning smile.

I don’t think the NCAA results should have any bearing on her marketability. And granted, she still had an amazing 500 free…

If anything, she passed on a sure thing win by willingly foregoing the back stoke events for the team. Put her in the 200 back and she would have has 2 individual titles no question in my mind
