Sofia Chichaikina Clocks 49.4 in 100 Free on Final Day of Rutgers Invite

2019 RUTGERS SWIMMING & DIVING INVITATIONAL

Sofia Chichaikina continued to excel for Rutgers on the final day of competition, taking the women’s 100 free with a new best of 49.46. On top of that, Rutgers had the next two swimmers in, with Elinah Phillip and Giulia Ghidini touching in 50.32 and 50.59 respectively. Chichaikina, Phillip, Ghidini, and Eleonora Trentin combined for a 3:21.68 to win the women’s 400 free relay, with splits of 50.29, 49.93, 50.53, and 50.93 respectively.

Columbia’s Karen Liu was a force in the women’s 200 fly, clocking a 1:58.78. Teammate Helen Wojdylo won the previous women’s event, the 200 breast, with a 2:14.74.

Lehigh picked up a few men’s event wins on the day, starting with Matt Feryo in the 200 back. Feryo won the race with a 1:49.07, besting teammate Joey Huber, who came in 2nd with a 1:49.51. Lehigh won the next event as well, with Glenn Lasco finsihing in a speedy 44.57. Lasco went on to lead the Lihigh 400 free relay off in 44.70, which went on to win the event by a huge margin. Lehigh also won the men’s 200 breast, with Nick Highman touching the wall first in 2:02.92, securing the victory by 6 seconds.

The miles were also on the final day of competition. Rutgers’ leading distance swimmer, Francesca Bertotto, clocked a 16:46.60 to win the women’s mile by 2 seconds. Bertotto had gotten out to a strong start, flipping at the 500 mark in 4:58.69. UConn’s Gavin Moak was victorious in the men’s 1650, swimming a 15:25.89.
