Shaine Casas Breaks His Own American Record in the 200 IM

2025 SWIMMING WORLD CUP – CARMEL

American swimmer Shaine Casas broke the American and U.S. Open Records in the 200 IM on Saturday evening in Carmel, Indiana, beating the world’s top swimmer in the event, and his training partner, Leon Marchand in the process.

Casas won the World Cup title in a time of 1:49.43, which shaved .08 seconds off his time from December’s World Short Course Championships as the fastest-ever by an American. It also beat the U.S. Open Record of 1:50.76 set by Japan’s Daiya Seto in 2019 at an ISL meet. That makes Casas the fastest swimmer of any nationality on American soil.

Casas was almost exactly on pace in the front half of the race, but really changed the back-half of his race. He was about half-a-second slower on the breaststroke leg than he was in December, and about the same amount faster on the freestyle leg to finish the race.

Splits Comparison:

Casas Casas
New American Record
Former American Record
50m fly 23.10 23.13
50m back 27.64 27.67
50m breast 32.22 31.70
50m free 26.47 27.01
Total Time 1:49.43 1:49.51

This is a bold strategy given his opponent, but in this race, he outsplit the defending Olympic Champion in the 200 breaststroke Leon Marchand on the breaststroke leg in spite of his slower split, and led the race wire-to-wire.

This is Casas’ second individual American Record swim and his second U.S. Open Record – after breaking the 100 IM in 50.86 on Friday evening.

So ridiculously talented… he can be the mega star the US Men’s team desperately needs coming into LA28. Fingers crossed that he stays in the right head space.

It’s so great to see Shaine finally have the success everyone has known he could. Guy is literally the most talented male American swimmer now and beating Leon in the 2 IM I think for the first time in a meet is really something for him. Also I think the WR is gonna get broken with or without Leon in the next few stops. This World Cup series is already so much faster than even last year despite there only being 1 WR so far more all time performances though than last time that are very close to the WR.

I’m convinced Casas has the talent to break Lochte’s LC 200 IM American Record. I hope he’s able to put it together.

Well he did go 1:54.30 last year so I think he’s well on his way to doing just that. He might be a direct threat/rival to Leon tbh but will have to see as the next few seasons go on.

He has serious potential for a jaw dropping LCM worlds or olympic performance if he hits taper right. Marchand needs a rival

They are training partners, so probably pushing each other to reach newer heights. So much for all of the people crying about non USA swimmers training in the USA

Will be interesting to see how close he gets to Leons record throughout the series
