Seven Meet Records Go Down At Spanish Championships

On the third night of the 2014 Spanish National Championships 10 individual events where swum with seven resulting in new championship records.

Mercedes Peris Minguet broke her own 2012 championship record of 28.52 twice in one day posting a 28.24 in the prelims going on to win the event in a time of 28.16. She was just off her season’s best of 28.14 which currently sits ninth in the world rankings. Duane Marce Da Rocha finished second in a time of 28.73 followed by Lidon Munoz del Campo who recorded a time of 29.58.

Felipe Lima broke Hector Montegudo‘s 2009 championship record of 27.78 in the prelims qualifying for the final in a time of 27.58. He went on to win the event in a time of 27.76 with Montegudo finishing second in a time of 28.08. Lima’s time improves on his season’s best of 27.65 and moves him up to 15th in the world rankings.

In the women’s event Jessica Vall Montero won the event in a time of 31.45 breaking her own record of 31.69 which she set in the prelims. The old record of 32.19 was set in 2009 by Angela Rivera Perez. Concepcion Badillo Diaz finished  second in a time of 31.97 followed by Marina Garcia Urzainqui who touched in a time of 32.03.

Mireia Belmonte Garcia picked up her second win of the competition taking the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:35.69. Belmonte Garcia broke her own meet mark of 4:42.09, which she set in 2010, in the prelims qualifying for the final in a time of 4:41.07. She went on to break it again in the final.

She was well off of her season’s best of 4:32.92 which posted in April, but her result from this evening is the second fastest time she has put up in 2014.

Maria Vilas Vidal collected the silver in a time of 4:41.07 followed by Catalina Corro Lorente who posted a time of 4:42.71.

Melanie Costa Schmid took the women’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:58.12 breaking Patricia Castro Ortega‘s 2009 meet record of 1:58.83. Costa Schmid was followed by Fatima Gallardo Carapeto who finished in a time of 1:59.85 and Mireia Belmonte Garcia who posted a 1:59.93.

Konrad Czerniak of Poland won the men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 52.28 breaking Rafael Munoz Perez’s 2011 championship record of 52.63. Czerniak was well off his season’s best of 51.89.

Carmen Balbuena Heredia won the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 59.64 breaking Angela Cisneros‘ 2007 meet record of 59.92.

After having to eek out a win in the men’s 1500 freestyle Marc Sanchez Torrens took the men’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:03.43 followed by Antonio Arroyo Perez who posted a 8:06.98.

The men’s 50 backstroke came right down to the last stroke with Federic Grabich winning the event in a time of 25.60 followed by Miguel Ortiz Canavate-Ozeki who touched in a time of 25.62.

Grabich was also involved in another intense battle in the men’s 200 freestyle. Albert Puig Garrich took the event in a time of 1:49.58 followed by Grabich who took the silver in a time of 1:49.59.
