Rutgers Swimming and Diving tops Wagner

In its first competitive dual meet of the season, the Rutgers swimming and diving team dominated Wagner on Friday night at the RU Aquatics Center. The Scarlet Knights posted a final score of 168-112 highlighted by 13 first-place finishes out of 16 events.

“It was great to see the team get off to a solid start with some very strong swimming and diving at this point in the season,” said head coach Phil Spiniello. “I am proud of the team and hope we can carry this momentum into next weekend’s meet.”

The Scarlet Knights put up their best performance of the day in the 100 freestyle, sweeping the top three sports. Junior Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.) touched the wall first at 52.47. Sophomore Meghan Kiely (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) came in next with a time of 53.43, followed by junior Julia Kudryashova (New Providence, N.J.) with a time of 54.19.

RU also notched the top-two spots in a total of four events.

In the 200 free relay, the team of junior Kudryashova, Kiely, Coyne and junior Sophie Newton (Leesburg, Va.) hit the wall first at 1:38.15. The group of sophomore Chantal Asselin(Winnipeg, MB, Canada), senior Brogan Lee (Lindstrom, Minn.), sophomore Barbra Brottman (Deerfield, Ill.) and senior Caroline Carlisle (Holy Springs, N.C.) came in second at 1:42.84.

Senior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.17, followed by sophomore Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) with a 2:24.91 result.

In the 50 free, Coyne touched the wall first at 24.22. Junior Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) was close behind, getting the touch at 24.25.

Leberfinger and freshman Emily Erwin (Jenkintown, Pa.) went on to take first and second respectively in the 400 individual medley.

On the boards, sophomore Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) placed first in both the 1-meter dive (229.64) and 3-meter dive (235.13).

Next up, Rutgers hosts Villanova, Georgetown and Seton Hall for a quad meet on Friday, Nov. 7 to Saturday, Nov. 8.
