All but two races in which a Deaf Swimming World Record is recognized saw both the Deaflympic and World Record broken on Monday as swimming resumed following an off day Sunday.

That started with the women’s 400 free, where Russia’s Viktoria Terenteva won in 4:25.94. She’s only 18 years old and was the second-youngest swimmer in the final. Her time broke the World Record set by Anna Tovsta at the 2009 Deaflympics in Tapei.

That was one of 6 wins (in 7 finals) for the Russians on Monday, and one of 3 World Records for them alone. Olga Kliuchnikova won and set a record in the women’s 50 back with a 29.34; and the Russian men’s 400 medley relay won by 7 seconds in 3:48.86.

The other World Record of the session whent to Brazil’s Guilherme Maia in the men’s 200 free. He finished in 1:52.55, which just beat out Japan’s Satoi Fujihara (1:52.82). Fujihara had previously set the World Record in prelims in 1:52.99, and both swimmers were under that standard in finals.

Other Day 4 Winners:

  • Unsurprisingly, the dominant Russian team won the mixed 400 medley relay, swimming 4:07.20. Ukraine was 2nd in 4:07.81 – a surprising push that included a wild come-from-behind attempt by teenager Mariya Rezehylo on the anchor. She split 58.37 – the fastest female anchor in the field by over a second.
  • Martin Robertovich Fomin broke the Deaflympics Record in the men’s 50 breaststroke with a 29.22 – eclipsing his prelims swim of 29.29. The World Record remains in the hands of American Marcus Titus, who swam 27.79 in 2011.
  • Russia’s Polina Bilalova won the women’s 200 fly in 2:23.12.
