Many teams on the west coast traveled their distance freestylers to Long Beach, California for the MPSF Open Water Championships on Saturday. The Rice women had one of the furthest distances to travel to get there and made the trip well worth it as they won both events.

Winning the women’s 5000 free event was Ella Dyson as she swam to a 1:01:21.00. She finished a minute ahead of teammate Ava Portello who swam to a 1:02:20.00. Dyson is #2 all-time in Rice school history in the 1650 free with a 16:20.26 that she swam to win her 3rd straight AAC title.

Both Dyson and Portello teamed up to take the first two legs of Rice’s 2000 free relay. Ava Hamblett and Mollie McAlorum joined the duo as the team won in a 25:11.42, winning by over 30 seconds. Washington State was 2nd in the relay race as the team of Sophie Hay, Tatum Janning, Viven Nett, and Avery Bulkley swam to a 25:54.19.

The Cal Baptist men won the men’s team standings as they were highlighted by a win in the 2000 free relay. The results do not give specific athletes but the team swam to a 24:30.02 to finish five seconds ahead of BYU’s relay that was 2nd in a 24:25.03. BYU’s relay was made up of Darwin Anderson, Easton Mousser, Tanner Nelson, and Dane Weber.

Winning the individual 5000 free on the men’s side was Thomas Langlois of Whittier College who swam to a 59:06.41. He finished just ahead of Cal Baptist’s Mark Kovacsics who swam to a 59:07.14.
