Reznicek Breaks School Record As Brown Cruises To Sweep of Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (2-4) women’s swimming and diving closed out its home schedule with a 181-96 victory over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. Freshman Jenna Reznicek shattered her personal best and set a program standard in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 52.94, an NCAA standard.

The previous mark was 53.82 by Taylor Seaman (2020) at Ivies.

“Right now, our team is acutely aware that, on any given day, the only opportunity that we can be certain of is the one we have on that same day,” said Kate Kovenock, Mary Ann Lippitt Women’s Swimming/Diving Coaching Chair. “That mindset has served us well in our current block of winter training, and this particular “today” was a really good day. We were able to honor our seniors and put up some great performances in a great pool.”

Brown’s 200 medley relay of Reznicek, Kellie WillhiteSage Matsushima and Samantha Scott got things rolling with a win, showcasing a time of 1:42.24. The Bears’ “B” team of Rebecca WatersonEllie BraultNell Chidley and Maria Iorini placed second at 1:44.11.

Sara Barrett won the 1000 free with a time of 10:01.75. Anna Podurgiel took the 200 free at 1:49.88. Reznicek’s program mark, Waterson (56.34) and Emily Clements (56.48) went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke.

The 100 breaststroke featured two Bears atop the leaderboards in Audrey Lukawski (1:03.58) and Willhite (1:03.93).

Julia FeordLiv Mitchell and Alexa Brinker swept the 3-meter diving with scores of 305.70, 294.08, and 275.40, respectively. Feord, Mitchell and Brinker also swept the 1-meter.

Podurgiel won the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.70. Reznicek and Clements went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke, finishing with times of 1:58.63 and 1:59.39, respectively.

Lukawski also finished atop the leaderboard in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.67) and Brown swept the 500 freestyle with Sara Barrett (4:55.34), Audrey Orange (5:00.59) and Bella Antoniuk (5:01.36).

The 100 butterfly spotlighted top finishes by Reznicek, Chidley and Matsushima in order.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (3-2) men’s swimming and diving defeated Columbia in a dual meet, 194-100, on Saturday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

“It was a very exciting, hard-fought win for our program this afternoon,” said Kevin Norman, Ollie ’50 & Kay Patrell Men’s Swimming & Diving Coaching Chair. “We have been training at a very high level since January 1st and I am so proud of the energy and effort the team brought today. Columbia is a very talented, well-coached team and we knew we would need to be ready. Picking up a W for our seniors in their last home meet meant a lot to our team.”

Brown concludes its home slate 4-1 including the Bruno Invite win.

The 200 medley team of Zach Le-NguyenVincent HuangHorace Qiao and Jerry O’Mara earned four points with a second-place finish (1:30.95).

The 1000 yard freestyle featured three Bears atop the leaderboards; Mason Romantic (9:24.68), Aidan Wilson (9:29.44) and Nicolas Ortega (9:30.66).

In the 200 free, Michael Lincoln won with a time of 1:37.90, following by teammates Tyler Lu (1:40.46) and Nathan Depiero (1:42.21).

Le-Nguyen and Reid Arwood took two of the top three spots in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall at 50.15 and 50.61, respectively.

Ben Hayes led all competitors in the 200 butterfly, winning the event (1:48.87) and Lukas Scheidl placed third (1:51.03).

Trevor Labuda was the leader on the board in the 1-meter with a score of 324.75, followed by Nicholas Shen‘s 282.90 and John Byers‘ 277.73. Labuda, Shen and Byers also placed in the same order in the 3-meter.

The 100 free was swept by the Bears with Lincoln (45.06), Lucas Hess (45.70) and O’Mara (46.31) going 1-2-3, respectively.

Carlos Munoz Renteria won the 200 backstroke in 1:48.41 and Arwood placed third.

The 200 IM belonged to Hayes (1:49.33), with Scheidl (1:52.29) and Huang (1:52.67) following.

Brown’s team of Hess, Lincoln, O’Mara and Lu won the 400 free relay to close out the meet (3:01.27).

PROVIDENCE, RI — Strong individual performances from Columbia’s men’s and women’s swim teams fell short as the Lions dropped to the Brown Bears in Providence. Diana Caskey‘s women finished 96-181 while Jim Bolster‘s men collected a 100-194 result.

On the women’s side junior Karen Liu broke the 2:00 barrier, winning the 200 butterfly in 1:59.15. Classmate Isabelle Arevalo took first in the 50 free (23.21), pacing the finish for Emily MacDonald (23.47), Claire Lin (24.25), and Jazlynn Pak (24.50) in the 3-4-5 slots. First-year Allison Martin rounded out the Lions’ individual first-place finishers, collecting nine points in the 200 IM (2:03.33).

Arevalo and MacDonald joined Olivia Jubin and Clare Larsen to win the 400 free relay in 3:23.69. Meanwhile, teammates Aniston EyreGeorgia YoungEmily Wang, and Callie Breiter swam for second (3:28.03)

Columbia collected the majority of the top spots in the 1,000, 200, and 100 free. Sophomore Aziza Ganihanova earned a second place result in the grueling 1,000 free (10:04.73) followed by Mary Pruden (3,10:09.54) and Jubin (4, 10:13.45). Clare Larsen led the Lions in the 200 free, taking second in 1:52.12, followed by Young in third (1:53.32), and  Eyre in fourth (1:52.67). Young improved to a second place finish in the 100 free (51.77) followed by Eyre (51.85), Larsen (52.21), and Tina Li in fifth (52.25).

The women return to Morningside Heights tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 16, to host Cornell at noon. The Lions last took on the Big Red on Jan. 12, 2020, claiming a 164-136 victory at Percy Uris. Cornell stands at 2-3 in dual meet action having defeated St. Bonaventure (144-92) and Dartmouth (155-143) while falling to Harvard (213-87), Penn (208.5-91.5), and Princeton (221-78).

Senior Jonas Kistorp and first-year Demirkan Demir continued to headline the men’s squad, earning two victories a piece. Kistorp touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (20.51), besting Brown’s Horace Qiao by fractions of a second (20.94) before defeating the same Bear in the 100 butterfly (49.36). Coming off a record-setting meet at the Big Al Invitational in December, Demir swam for first in the 100 breaststroke (55.91) ahead of teammate Michael Chang (56.47) and the 200 breastroke (2:01.68). Columbia’s David Wang took second in the 200 breast in 2:02.50. Also earning an individual first-place finish was rookie Kyle Won whose 50.14 finish in the 100 backstroke was just one tenth of a second ahead of Brown’s Zach Le-Nguyen (50.15).

Kistorp and Demir opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay alongside sophomore Andy Huang and junior Thomas Shepanzyk in 1:30.32. The relay team of Chang, Kyle WonRay Yang, and Hayden Liu collected third in 1:31.91.
