Women’s 200 IM – Finals – Reported by SwimSwam

Katie Hoff looked really good through the first 100, holding a lead of almost a body length. She made a statement tonight, winning the race with a time of 2:12.92. Caitlin Leverenz moved up a little with her dominant final 100, but it was not enough to catch Hoff. She touched the wall at 2:14.61. Stina Gardell was third with her time of 2:15.34.
Mary Pelton won the B-final with a 2:18.77.

It’s nice to look Hoff so happy after a swim, because my strongest memory of her at the end of a race was that super shell-shocked face at the finish line of 2008 Beijing 400 IM when she looked at the scoreboard.

Not the 400 free when Adlington has beaten her at the end?
It was hard for me to watch her lose the gold like that.

She looks very good. Does anyone know where is she training and who is her coach?

She’s training at Hurricane Swimming. I think it’s a situation a little bit of flux, but my impression is that she’s working primarily with Aaron Ciarla.

Great to see her racing this well again. Fly leg was impressive going into the wind like that, 2:12 is a great sign.

Unfortunately, the commentary took away from this race. Nearly the entire first minute had nothing to do with Katie swimming or anyone else for that matter. I understand the need to make a plug for your programming, but during the A final of an event is not one. Am I the only one who’s not impressed with Rowdy calling meets? (Gasp! Blasphemy!!) I admire him as a swimmer, competitor and ambassador of the sport. I wish him well in Florida, but we need someone else on the mic.

Go to the Ledecky’s 800 free race video article and read what I said.

But I still like him. He’s a funny and passionate guy.

Completely agreed. The next time I hear him mention two athletes breathing towards each other at the end of a race I’m gonna smash my computer. Oh, and his reliance on reaction time to gauge who has a good start. Makes me nuts.

Can’t say he’s bad for the Olympics, though – he’s excitable and that’s not the worst thing.

Well… OF COURSE Rowdy Gaines is obsessed with reaction time?
How could he be otherwise?

His most (in)famous win was a result of a “magical” reaction time.

Agreed, I am not 100% fan. He completely blew Olympic trials 200 free call between Missy Franklin and Allison Schmitt. He is the Today Show of swimming–finding the media darling (is there anyone else that swims besides Michael Phelps according to NBC)–and being unable get off the pre-planned track. I expect that of Matt Lauer but not a real swimmer like Gaines. I really do not want them to do to Missy Franklin what has been done to Katie Hoff and Phelps. May be too late as Franklin has now gone Pro. At any rate, glad to see Hoff performing well. She went on to do well at 2015 meet. Gaines does make swimming exciting but he needs to listen… Read more »

Big wind!
And great win for Katie!
Happy to see her happy.
Rowdy said during the race : “She’s looking like Katie Hoff!”
YES!!!!
Her butterfly was very good.
She struggled a little bit on freestyle but give her a few months more of training and she will be able to finish much faster the race.
Very promising meet for Katie.
