2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Note: Pre-cut psych sheets are not final. There was already an error this year with a mistaken Auto Qualifier designations, but that has already been updated. Final selections are generally released Wednesday afternoon. Any changes that happen before that release will change the math. Any change after the release of the post-cut psych sheets—such as a swimmer scratching the meet, which often happens—will pull in the next alternate regardless of event.

The NCAA has released the pre-selection psych sheets for the 2026 Women’s Division I NCAA Championships, and SwimSwam has projected this year’s cutline.

In previous years, this has been a far easier undertaking, but it is more difficult to parse through due to the addition of automatic qualifiers via conference championships.

The new model means that there is no clear cutline this year. In some events, the 37th seed earns an invite, but in others, the 35th seed misses the meet. This year’s first alternate is UCLA’s Sarah Bennetts, who was the 35th seed in the 100 breaststroke with her 59.55.

On the flip side, 37th seed in the 200 backstroke, San Diego State’s Abby Storm earned an invite, as did 37th seed in the 100 fly, Beatriz Bezerra from Florida. We have listed the last new invite in every event and their respective seed.

This isn’t entirely accurate for what the invite time in each event is, since many swimmers have higher seeds in other events. In the 100 freestyle, for example, Wisconsin’s Abby Wanezek was the last new invite as the 27th seed, but the swimmers seeded 28th-38th all have higher seeds in other individual events. SMU’s Maddy Parker is the highest seed in the 100 free who did not earn an invite to the meet at 39th with her 47.94. Since there is no consistent cut-line, we have no way of determining an official ‘invite time’ as we have in prior years.

The last two swimmers who earned invites this year were Inez Miller from Texas in the 200 freestyle (1:44.00, 34th seed), and Ohio State’s Carrie Furbee (21.92, 35th seed).

The new qualifying procedure, in its simplest terms:

  • Step 1: Divers go in (35 men, 41 women)
  • Step 2: All individual swimmers who won a conference championship AND hit the Qualifying Standard in that event get the auto-bid.
  • Step 3: (Steps 3 & 4 are similar to years past) Swimmers are added one at a time in each event, keeping the number of qualifiers in each event the same* until the entry cap is reached (235 swimmers for men, 281 swimmers for women).
  • Step 4: When the entry cap is reached, you wind up with a ‘final row’ in each event. For women, that’s usually around #40, for men, that’s usually around #30 in each event. Swimmers already qualified in step two are now guaranteed their spot, while the rest are ranked by their time as a percentage of the qualifying standard, with the fastest times added one at a time until the cap is met.

Teams are capped at 18 swimmers and divers for their roster, and Virginia is the only school that has already hit their roster limit with 18 invited swimmers. They do not have any divers on their roster, so they should not need to scratch any athletes due to roster limits.

Just like always, the tiebreaker came into effect this year, but instead of the tiebreaker being percentage of the ‘A’ standard, it is percentage of the qualifying standard. Bennetts is the 1st alternate, and she will be added to the meet if their are any scratches, regardless of event.

The second tie-breaker, which is relevant if alternates are tied for the same ratio, is based on the swimmer’s second-best event.

Projected Invitees

The new entry procedure sees automatic qualifiers added to the meet first, regardless of seed. That means that when projecting the cutline, each swimmer who earned an AQ was added first as the “top seed” even if they were not the top seed in their event. Because of this, the seed column numbers are off from the actual listed seeds in the pre-selection psych sheet.

How many more schools/conferences were invited this year compared to last year? I would assume many more of both. Maybe this ends up helping boost interest 🤔

if my math is correct stanford has 16 qualifiers + 3-4 divers they could add in. so theyll prob have to cut 1-2 of those qualifiers.

texas is at 15 qualifiers but i think theyll only add in 2-3 divers. so no movement expected there.

Divers used to count as 1/2 a swimmer, don’t know if that changed with this new system

What are people’s thoughts on the selection change so far? As someone who follows swimming pretty closely, I find it confusing and can’t say I’m a fan. Don’t see how this would help in any way with casual fans either. Was there more than usual fanfare for [slower] conference winners?

Casual fans, no, but they don’t care about non A-final swimmers anyway, in this selection method or the old method. It might help gain the attention of fans from the conferences that typically don’t send anyone to NCAAs, though, since they now have representatives.

Somebody’s parents wanted their slower swimmer at NCAA’s with REAL elite athletes. The auto qualifiers don’t deserve it

This doesn’t quite make sense. Shouldn’t AQs get put in, then every event filled to the same number of AQs as the event that has the most, then go line by line after that? That way the line is more consistent across events.

What you’ve described here is essentially how this works. We end up with an equal number of swimmers qualified in each event, but the rank of the last swimmer under the line is different in events with different numbers of auto qualifiers above the cut line. The part that is odd is that the qualifying priority order is different from the event rank.

Shouldn’t you add the AQs in each event they qualified for? you only have them on the list in one event. This would push the “line” down further.

Did you factor in swimmers who made the meet because of relay(s)? Wouldn’t that make the number <281?

They don’t count toward the 281 if they’re relay-only swimmers.

Relay invitees no longer get bonus events. That policy changed maybe 10 years ago.

OK, thanks. But what if they are a relay-qualified with a cut in an individual event that is ranked like 45th or something. Would they get to swim that event, and would they then count against the 281.

sorry if i wasn’t clear in last reply; i don’t mean to ask the same question twice. I just wasn’t sure from your answer if someone who “made the meet” because of a relay gets to also swim individual events that they have the cuts for. I believe D3 does it that way, or recently did?

Relay only swimmers do not get individual swims.
