PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each split the results in their first tri-meet of the season. Both teams took down Cornell with the women winning 212-88 and the men winning 168-132. However, the Quakers could not overcome the hosts as the women were defeated 243-57 and the men were edged 156-144.

Penn had 17 total podium finishes today with seven wins. Junior captain Sean Lee led all swimmers—men and women—with a trio of first-place finishes.

Recapping the Women
The Quakers earned their first victory of the season, taking down Cornell, 212-88. Grace Giddings got things going as she raced to a third-place finish in the 1,000 free with a season-best time of 10:07.98—just 0.13 seconds off second place.

Hannah Kannnan led Penn swimmers as the sophomore picked up a pair of second-place finishes in both backstroke events. Kannan raced to a season-best time of 55.04 in the 100 back before a 30.32 final split earned her a second-place finish in the 200 back (2:02.31).

Serena Xue continued a strong senior season with a second-place finish in the 200 breast, touching in 2:20.22.

The Quakers closed out the meet on a positive note with a third-place finish in the 400 free relay. A team consisting of two seniors (Emily LayneMeredith Newman) and two freshmen (Camryn CarterMargot Kaczorowski) raced to a 3:34.06 finish.

Recapping the Men
Lee continued to glide across the water this season and finished the day leading all swimmers with three event victories. The junior started things off by sprinting to a first-place finish in the 50 free (20.57). Following a diving break, Lee once again sprinted to victory, touching first in the 100 free with a career best time of 45.25. He closed things out by racing to victory in the 100 fly (48.67).

While Lee led all swimmers with three victories, it was a prominently young core which helped Penn to a 168-132 win over Brown and a narrow, 156-144 loss to Princeton.

Matt Bonnell led that young core with a pair of victories. He started the day with a first-place finish in the 1,000 free (9:19.95); his first victory in that distance event. He followed up with a win in the 500 free (4:30.22). Bonnell has won the 500 free in each of Penn’s three Ivy League meets this season and has now taken five first-place finishes so far this season.

Bonnell led a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free—an event which the Quakers have dominated this season. William Kamps finished second (4:32.27) followed by Jacob Furlong in third (4:33.43).

Fellow freshmen Jason Schreiber was another one of Penn’s seven first-place finishers. The California native raced to a 2:01.89 finish in the 200 breast—the fastest time the freshman, or any Penn breaststroker has clocked this season.

Continuing the trend with first-place finishes was John-Michael Diveris, who once again posted the top score in the 3-meter dive with a career-high score of 345.20. Diveris is making a splash in his senior season and has won the 3-meter dive in each of Penn’s four meets this season.

UP NEXT
The Quakers will take a holiday break next weekend before splitting up in the first week of December. Select swimmers will head to the Miami of Ohio Invitational from December 5-7 while others will travel to Atlanta, Ga. for the Toyota U.S. Open from December 4-7.
