Pomona-Pitzer Sweeps SCIAC Titles for Second-Straight Year

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s swimming & diving team won the program’s second consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship title Sunday evening at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif.

Pomona-Pitzer logged a winning score of 1125.50, followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in second with 984.50 points and Redlands in third with 588 points. California Lutheran took fourth with 478.50 points, while Occidental was fifth with 465. Caltech finished sixth (436), followed by Chapman (287.50), La Verne (198) and Whittier (97).

The men’s 1650-yard freestyle featured a top time of 15:34.45 set by Pomona-Pitzer’s Paddy Baylis, while Benjamin Brewer of Cal Lutheran clocked a time of 15:34.47 to finish second. The tight race saw Brandon Pon of La Verne finish third with a mark of 15:46.13.

Caltech’s Nick Jasinski won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.17 followed by Jason Lu and Liam O’Shea of Pomona-Pitzer who notched respective times of 1:48.56 and 1:50.01.

Teammates Aaron Bauer and Sam Ayers of Redlands finished first and second in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 45.47 and 45.48, while Lukas Menkhoff of the Sagehens was just behind at 45.50 in close race.

Tom Gallup of the Beavers took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:01.39, while Henry Limm of CMS was second in 2:01.60. Aaron Lutzker of the Stags placed in the bronze spot with a time of 2:02.33.

Andreas Nybo of Cal Lutheran powered to a top finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:47.85, while Will Abele of Pomona-Pitzer came finished in the silver position with a time of 1:49.34. John Everett of CMS placed third with a time of 1:51.13.

The Sagehens’ 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Menkhoff, Abele, Archie Spindler and Ryan Drover finished first with a time of 3:00.69, while the Redlands combination of Carson Brett, Lucas Ulmer, Ayers and Bauer glided to second with a time of 3:03.01. CMS took third as Andreas Roeseler, Marco Conati, Christian Simon and Daniel Hayon registered a mark of 3:04.30.

Women’s Recap

The Pomona-Pitzer women’s swimming & diving team captured its second straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title and third in four years Sunday evening at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Calif.

Pomona-Pitzer finished with 1114.50 points, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) followed with 1071.50. Occidental finished third with 507 points, while Redlands and Chapman placed fourth and fifth with respective scores of 479.50 and 413.50. Caltech was sixth with 402 points, followed by California Lutheran (267), Whittier (237) and La Verne (228).

The women’s 1650-yard freestyle saw Mia Syme of CMS break her own meet record in the event with a time of 17:03.21, while Occidental’s Katherine Hines logged a time of 17:39.63 in the race to place second. Kristen Mortimer of Pomona-Pitzer picked up the bronze with a time of 17:46.39.

The 200-yard backstroke featured a win by the Sagehens’ Angela Ling (2:03.23), while teammate Sarah Jin added a second place time of 2:04.12. Natalie Larsen of the Athenas took third in the race with a time of 2:05.10.

Madison Kauahi of Pomona-Pitzer won the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 51.35, while Riley Hoffman of CMS glided to second with a time of 51.88. CMS’s Natalia Orbach-Mandel and Pomona-Pitzer’s Hannah Zurmuhl each placed third with a time of 51.97.

The 200-yard breaststroke saw Alexandra Werner clock a winning time of 2:18.62, while Augusta Lewis and Claire Bacon-Brenes of the Athenas placed second and third with respective times of 2:19.57 and 2:20.83.

The Tigers’ Cindy Dong featured as the top finisher in the 200-yard-butterfly with a time of 2:02.13, setting a new meet and SCIAC record in the process. Brittany Percin of Caltech added a time of 2:03.69, while Wendy McAleer of Redlands took third with a time of 2:06.27.

Pomona-Pitzer’s 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Zurmuhl, Allison Liu, Kate Denend, and Kauahi powered to a winning time of 3:27.35, while CMS’s Hoffman, Janet Tran, Emma Stacy, and Orbach-Mandel clocked a second place time of 3:27.78. Chapman’s tandem of Jailey Reeves, Sadie Wiens, Kristina Fong and Molly Davis finished third with a time of 3:33.08.
