Oregon HS 4A/3A/2A/1A Championships: North Bend Girls Beat Sweet Home By 1/2 Point, Catlin Gabel Boys Win

The 2015 OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A Swimming State Championships at Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center could hardly have been more exciting, at least on the girls’ side where North Bend eked out the team victory by the narrowest of margins: a half-point.

Girls’ Meet

North Bend jumped right in with a record-breaking swim in the first event at the 4A/3A/2A/1A state meet. They crushed the 1:51.64 mark they had set in prelims with a 1:49.75 final swim. Vianka Hoyer (28.20), Cassie Dallas (30.08), Alyssa Bennett (25.72), and Alyssa Monohon (25.75) represented North Bend on the final relay. Salem Academy (Kiera Supple, Grace Warde, Emma Boles, and Joelle Debban) came in second with 1:54.50, while Henley (Lorin Alexander, Haley Steiner, Aunika Torres, and Jenny Kirschner) was third in 1:55.74.

Sweet Home’s Lucie Davis won the 200 free with 1:54.50. Sarah Krueger of Valley Catholic came in second in 1:546.95; Kirschner of Henley was third with 1:58.89.

Lauren Yon of Sweet Home won the state title in the 200 IM in 2:09.25, ahead of North Bend’s Dallas (2:11.18) and Supple from Salem Academy (2:15.67). Supple won the 100 back in 59.29. Jessica Coats of Sweet Home was second in 1:00.19, just out-touching Hannah Roberts of La Grande (1:00.48).

Alyssa Bennett led a 1-2 North Bend sweep of the 50 free with her winning time of 24.59; teammate Hoyer was just behind in 24.81. Shelby Baker of La Grande finished third in 25.06. Hoyer turned right around and won the 100 fly in 57.32. Sweet Home’s Coats and Valley Catholic’s Krueger tied for second in 58.65.

Bennett’s second state title came in the 100 free, where she finished with 53.57. Sweet Home’s Yon won a narrow victory for second place over Mary Stewart of Sisters, 54.18 to 54.20, and Henley’s Kirschner was just behind in 54.34.

After breaking the 4A/3A/2A/1A record in prelims, Sweet Home’s Davis lowered it another 1.9 seconds in finals, going 4:59.12. Teammate Makayla Nelson took second with 5:18.62; Abbey Felley of La Grande came to the wall in 5:19.83 for third.

Sweet Home etched their names in the record books yet again in the 200 free relay, as Yon (25.40), Coats (25.21), Nelson (25.71), and Davis (24.97) went 1:41.29 for the new mark. North Bend (Zaraya Estrada, Makayla Proett, Damie Zomerschoe, and Alyssa Monohon) took second with 1:44.35, while Valley Catholic (Krueger, TinTin Luu, Clara Cannon, and Hailey Moraes) just eked out a third place finish over Sisters, 1:45.56 to 1:45.63.

North Bend’s Dallas took the 100 breast in 1:06.98. Haley Steiner of Henley was runner-up with 1:08.29, coming in just ahead of Sophia Gemelas of Madras (1:08.63) and Olivia Dow of St. Mary’s (1:08.81).

Sweet Home broke the 4A/3A/2A/1A record in the final 400 free relay, coming in at 3:37.19, but North Bend’s second-place finish gave them the 1/2 point advantage and the team title. Sweet Home’s winning relay consisted of Yon (54.14), Coats (54.58), Nelson (55.15), and Davis (53.32). North Bend (Hoyer, Dallas, Monohon, and Bennett) were also under the previous meet record with 3:37.63. Third place went to La Grande (Roberts, Heather Keniry, Felley, and Baker) in 3:48.49.

Boys’ Meet

The boys’ meet began with a 4A/3A/2A/1A record as well, as Catlin Gabel’s Ethan Hanson (24.56), Tristan Furnary (29.24), Sid Pai (25.12), and Chris Junn (20.77) took down Cottage Grove’s 2012 mark of 1:40.62 with 1:39.69. La Grande (Josh Ebel, Lance Denny, Bryce Ebel, and Keegan Dutto) were runners-up in 1:44.77, ahead of Philomath (Reid Priewe, Patrick Williamson, Clay Youker, and Bailey Jones) who touched in 1:46.15.

Hanson of Catlin Gabel won a tight 200 free race to begin the individual events. He came to the wall in 1:43.29, just edging Karl Stuntzner-Gibson of North Bend (1:43.59). Valley Catholic’s David Spurgeon was third with 1:49.39. Stuntzner-Gibson came back to win the 500 free in 4:50.54. Brandon Vasfare (5:00.99) of Sweet Home and Dutto (5:04.99) of La Grande were second and third.

Catlin Gabel’s Furnary came up with a big 1:50.65 win in the 200 IM, breaking the meet record of 1:51.15 from 2012. Jared Miller of Baker came in second with 1:59.63; Ben Settle from Valley Catholic went 2:00.48 for third. Furnary’s second win was in the 100 free, where he clocked a speedy 45.84. Philomath’s Williamson was second in 49.38; Josh Ebel of La Grande, third, in 49.61.

Phoenix’s Ethan Shepherd won the 50 free with a 22.43 in front of La Grande’s Bryce Ebel. Taden Swing from Salem Academy rounded out the podium with 23.24. Ebel then won the 100 fly by a significant margin, finishing in 50.86. Riverdale’s Garen Marter (54.62) and Catlin Gabel’s Pai (55.73) followed.

In the 200 free relay, Catlin Gabel’s Hanson (22.33), Pai (23.18), Junn (25.32), and Furnary (20.93) grabbed the win in 1:31.76. Sweet Home (Rowland Lupoli, Rawlins Lupoli, Jaeger Howatt, and Nathan Hager) were runners-up in 1:35.10. Seaside got the bronze in 1:35.18 with Will Garvin, Luke Liljenwall, Dylan Townsend, and Sam Beaudoin.

Catlin Gabel’s Hanson followed up his 200 free state title with a win in the 100 back. He went 51.71, and was followed by Jared Miller of Baker (53.07) and Valley Catholic’s Settle (53.57).

Philomath’s Williamson claimed victory in the 100 breast by a narrow margin over Marter of Riverdale, 1:01.61 to 1:01.98. Christian Scaglione of Cascade Christian placed third in 1:02.20.

Sweet Home’s Rowland Lupoli (53.20), Vasfaret (51.47), Howatt (51.03), and Hager (49.63) combined for 3:25.33 to just out-touch La Grande’s Dutto, Tony Clay, Josh Ebel, and Bryce Ebel (3:25.46). Newport (Arath Hernandez, Leland Wood, Austin Thompson, and Raul Carrasco) finished third in 3:30.93.
