St. Louis, MO – The Omaha Mavericks resumed competition against Saint Louis on Friday night. The women won their side of the meet 132.5 to 91.5, however, the men fell in a close 115-109 final.
“It is tough to compete on the same day of longer travel,” said head coach Jessica Hessel. “This was our first competition in a month and knew our team would need to be bold in their racing. I was proud of how our team competed and continued to race no matter how they were feeling. We have one last push of training and will be getting our men and women some much-needed rest for the end of our season. SLU was great to compete against. We are so evenly matched and it makes for a fun competitive environment. I look forward to continuing to have them on our schedule.”
Friday’s conference meet opened with the 200-medley relay where a team of Gracie Streblow, Jillian Altmaier, Annika Bussinger, and Elizabeth Ford took first with a time of 1:47.83. The men’s team of Mason Schroeder, Amir Haviv, Jace Walker, and Grant Waszak also claimed first with a time of 1:34.15.
Aubrey Hutter took second in the 1000-free for the women with a time of 10:50.74. On the men’s side, Matt Uehling earned fourth with a time of 10:26.01.
The fifth event of the night was the 200-free for the women where Hailey Matthews earned first with a time of 1:56.07. Omaha’s Kyle Kulow took second with a time of 1:46.08.
Up next in the set of races was the 50-free. With a time of 23.86 Payton Easley claimed first and just behind her in second with a time of 24.66 was Elizabeth Ford. For the men, Owen Hoak had a first-place finish with a time of 21.42.
In the 200-IM Olivia Dendinger (2:11.41) and Liv Theil (2:13.59) took the first and second spot, respectively. The men also took the top two spots. Caleb Miller (1:56.19) finished first and just behind him in second was Mason Schroeder (1:58.09).
Both the women and men took first in the 100-fly. For the women Annika Bussinger had a time of 57.26 and Jace Walker had a time of 52.17 for the men.
In the 100-free Payton Easley earned another first-place finish with a time of 51.94. For the men, Owen Hoak also had another first-place finish pacing the event with a 47.77 final time.
Parker Hagemann earned second in the 100-back with a 59.19 finish. For the men, Schroeder had another first-place finish finishing in 52.25.
In the 500-free, Matthews had second place with her final time of 5:12.82 and Kulow claimed third with a time of 4:53.25.
Altmaier with a time of 1:08.59 finished second in the 100-breast and Amir Haviv also earned second with a time of 58.06.
Omaha had another first-place finish in the 200-free relay with a team of Hailey Matthews, Morgan Baker, Parker Hagemann, and Payton Easley. They finished with a time of 1:37.47. The men with a team of Owen Hoak, Caleb Miller, Grant Schaeffer, Caleb Miller, and Grant Waszak took second with a time of 1:26.19.
In the diving portion of the night, Reece Cooper earned first on the 1-meter with a final score of 241.73. Ian Blackstock continued his win streak, claiming first with a score of 279.98.

The men and women will travel to St. Thomas for another conference duel next weekend Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis swimming and diving returned to action Friday night with a split against Omaha at Simon Recreation Center. The Billiken men edged the Mavericks 115-109, while Omaha earned a 132.5-91.5 win in the women’s meet.
Franklin Liu and Logan Townsend led the men’s team. Liu won the 500 free (4:45.73) and 1000 free (9:48.69), while Townsend captured the 200 free (1:43.66) and joined Colton Mosley, Wyatt Johnson and Ethan Highley for a victory in the 200 free relay (1:25.67).
Brae Sanchez also turned in a win, touching first in the 100 breast (56.84).
Emily Leonard was the leading performer for the Saint Louis women, topping the field in the 500 free (5:10.73) and 1000 free (10:37.59). Meghan Eng won the 100 back (58.74), and Kenna Cashman finished first in the 100 breast (1:08.23).
Up next for the Billikens is a dual meet at UMSL Saturday, Jan. 20, at noon.
