Ohio State Ready To Host 2017 Big Ten Championships

For the first time since 2010 Ohio State’s men’s swimming and diving teams will welcome the rest of the Big Ten into McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for the 2017 Big Ten Championships.

The seven-session meet begins Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. Prelims are set for the afternoon sessions and begin at 11 a.m. ET. Relays are contested, Big Ten champions determined and team points earned in the evening finals, which begin nightly at 6:30 p.m. ET. Diving prelims begin daily at 1 p.m. ET as the afternoon bridge between the sessions.

Below is the event schedule for this week. Finals will begin each night at 6:30 p.m. ET and prelims will begin on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. ET.

Last Year at Big Ten Championships

In 2016 the Buckeyes finished in third place to continue its streak of Top 5 finishes at their conference meet (every season since 2006). In addition to his championships listed below, Colin Zeng was named Diver of the Championships.

Overall, Ohio State claimed four Big Ten Championships:

One-meter diving: Colin Zeng, 450.55

Platform diving: Colin Zeng, 498.95

100 butterfly: Matt McHugh, 45.46

100 backstroke: Matt McHugh, 45.07

 

Ohio State at Big Tens

In its history, Ohio State has won 13 Big Ten Championships with the last coming in 2010, and its finished in the top-5 every year since 2006. The Buckeyes’ 13 team titles are third-most in conference history. Since Ohio State’s first Big Ten Championships in 1931, its claimed 200 gold medals: 95 in individual swimming events, 22 relays, and 83 in diving, which is almost twice as many as any other school.

In the Rankings

Ohio State is sitting pretty in both the College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America poll and the CollegeSwimming.com poll.

In the CSCAA poll the Buckeyes are currently 18th in the nation, and they are joined by four other Big Ten teams. Over at CollegeSwimming.com Ohio State is ranked 24th, along with four other Big Ten teams inside the Top 30.
